I'm thinking about buying a vehicle in Kansas City. How would I go about driving it home legally?

Bought a truck in NE and it was the same as in IA, put a temporary plate in window and drove home.

Either ask if you can drive it back with the owners plates and mail them to him or just put a "In Transit" paper in your window.

The dealer will give you a temp plate and that will take care of it. The bigger PIA is making sure the dealer excludes tax, title & license costs for that state as you'll need to pay those in your home state (@ DMV)

I recently bought a car from out of state - it all worked out OK, but that aspect was a bit frustrating

my bad, I thought we were talking private seller. What he said.

I bought a car in MN and never paid any taxes on it when I came back. Whoops. ...just registration.

Most people just make their own "In Transit" sign on a 8 x 10 and tape it to the window. The important thing is to have the bill of sale and signed title with you. You have 30 days to get your plates so it is legal to drive without plates as long as you have the proper paperwork.

Some out of state dealers that are close enough to Iowa will be able to take care of it for you. I bought a car in Illinois and they were able to send in all the Iowa paperwork. You could give them a call before you head there and ask.

Until you get it registered within 30 days of a private sell. Make sure that you have the title with you signed by the private seller. Make sure VIN on the title matches VIN on the car. Make sure to date it the title and put the odometer reading on it for the time of sale. If you do buy the vehicle, then call your insurance before you drive it back to add coverage. If you go thru Progressive Insurance, they immediately send you a temporary insurance card that you can print off or at least have handy on your smart phone.

Don't drive with someone else's plates and send them back. And don't put a handmade "In Transit" sign in the back window. Just drive without plates.

Or maybe you just slept in a Holiday Inn Express last night?

Oh ****, it's the cops. SCATTER!

I think it depends on the dealer. I've bought in KC and the dealer took care of everything. I've bought in Omaha and they didn't.

I bought a car in Omaha. Checked with my insurance, and as long as I had the title, I was covered under insurance. You have 30 days from title signing to register and document insurance on the car
