Buying a new laptop

I've been through Dell, Gateway, Toshiba, and HP, and I've had some good success with each one.
I tend to aim towards a little more than I need, but with a laptop, I'm not expecting it to last forever, either, so I'm not as worried as I used to be about overbuying.
Get ready for the Mac vs. PC thing, though. Every good-natured question about this turns into that by the 20th post.
I'm guessing that you're not doing something intensely technical. The brand won't make a huge difference. It really comes down to what you're comfortable with in terms of features, the comfort of the keyboard, monitor size, and all that stuff. The rest pretty much works itself out for most of us.

I have a mid-range Dell laptop and I like it. I mainly use it for iTunes, internet, and pictures. I do a little bit of office work on it, but not much.
One hting I'll check out the next time I am in the market will be the volume of the laptop. It is sometimes hard to hear the sound on videos and music. I'd also make sure it is pretty durable. I'm pretty rough on this thing.

dont buy a mac if youre just going to use it for general use. you can get a decent dell/hp/gateway for far less money that will suit your needs. not ripping on mac (too much anyway) but windows computers tend to be better for what youre wanting to use it for
Have had 2 different Sony Vaios and they have been great, no issues for either. My work laptop is a Dell and I have not had an issue either other than the guy that delivered it standing at my doorway and looking a bit stoned...
You know, Dell get's hammered, but I have had the same one for 5 years. The hard drive went out but I had the gold support so that was replaced for free and I was bale to get everything I needed back. I have had it cleared once. I can't ask for much more out of a computer for 5 years. I only use it for general purposes but it has done what I needed it to do.
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T410i and absolutely love it. Not overly expensive (bought it directly from the Lenovo website). I have never had any problems with it.
I found a Gateway (yes they still make them) a few months ago for my wife for around $500 and I have to say I've been pretty impressed by it so far. Great sound, fast, hdmi out, good looking screen, etc. I have an 3 or 4 year old Dell laptop that still works fine. The only thing I hate about the dell is that it's that shiny black that shows all the fingerprints. With the Gateway we went with silver.
