Hey Cyclone fans. Another Ute fan here, replying to the request to talk about why Utah is good this year as opposed to teams of the past. I posted this in another thread but thought I'd break it out to a new one so other fans could add their own views easier.

Your performance last week is good for us and we're excited to play a good opponent. I agree with other posters that you are probably the best team we've played so far. Pitt's been embarrassing. I think all of us Ute fans are looking forward to this game.

Most of the starters on the team that beat Alabama are gone--a little less than half of them were drafted (6 last year, 4 in 2009) and others made it in camp. Our QB for the Sugar Bowl is now our QB coach. Most of those left are on our O-line. Lots of our remaining team was there to see what it takes to get there. That's the past. They know it's what we do now that matters.

I think Ute fans realize that we are untested and got into the ranks by beating a ranked team in week one, and then did what we needed to do against really lightweight competition. Schools ahead of us lost--that's why we're top ten. The short of it is that Utah's schedule is backloaded. The key is keeping around the top ten until TCU at home, and Air Force and Notre Dame on the road. If you were to ask Kyle Whittingham about it, however, he would tell you that the only thing Utah cares about is Iowa State and with that, here is what makes Utah good this year:

+ Coaching. Whittingham is a blue collar coach that game plans really well. He also requires team orientation and toughness so we rarely see selfish play. Whitt also spots talent in places others don't and requires people to move where we need them. Four or more of our starters were recruited as quarterbacks. They now play receiver, LB, even on the line.

+ Lines. It is not very often that Utah loses the push on either side of the ball. Maybe at Oregon last year, definitely at TCU. TCU last year was the best team we've played in a long time. That game in November will be tough.

+ QB. The backup QB has the school record for pass efficiency and is a solid runner. The 3rd string is 6'5" with sub-4.4 speed--a true dual threat. Wynn is the starter because of intangibles. He got thrown to the wolves as a true freshman and showed he doesn't lose composure. He dings a little but his thumb is back and should be ready to throw. Ute fans are pretty excited about him.

+ Defense. The scheme is no secret. Good corners allow us to stack the box and we blitz. A lot. Lots of press coverage. Three of Utah's Sugar Bowl DBs were drafted. Current CBs have quality time and one will probably play Sunday. They're fast. Safeties include a true frosh who won us the Pitt game and proving to hit like a truck. LBs look good primarily because our line is deep. Utah rotates 10-odd people through the d-line so it stays fresh. Defense is Top 20 in seven categories right now but obviously that is fed by the poor competition to date. There were worries because all LBs were new but now they are team leaders in tackling (one led the country). Again, credit the line for that.

+ Running backs and TEs. Though we're a spread team, we are showing more power formations and putting TEs to good use. We are deep at both RB and TE this year. The RBs have two runners who have had 1000+ seasons in the past. One is 230 lbs., and his 250 lb. brother now plays fullback. Runs feed the passing, and vice versa. Though our current starting QB is not much of an option threat, we get the ball into others' hands pretty well. Whitt's RBs and WRs block. That's part of the program. You'll notice good pass blocking and downfield blocking. People sit if they don't do it.

+ Intangibles. Coaches have repeatedly said that this year's team is tighter than any team in recent memory, including those who played in the BCS games. That makes me excited about this year about as much as anything. Also, STs struggled on punt blocking earlier in the year but punt returns have been on fire the last few games. I think it's adding an attitude to all facets that has been pretty good. We had one penalty in garbage time in the last game, and that was it. That's unheard of for Utah football.

Other Utah fans may disagree, but those are what I think makes this year's team good.

Looking forward to this game and looking forward to learning more about Cyclone football. On a personal note, my bro is a Hawkeye and as a result, I am rooting for you to destroy them. Go Cyclones. (After Saturday.)

Let me add some specifics to Wrightaboutit's post.

O-line, Utah's is very good. We lost only the left tackle from last year's team (he's now starting for the Denver Broncos) and he was replaced by the most sought after JC lineman in the country. They have given up one sack and that was by the third string line in the last game.

Quarterback: Jordan Wynn is the starter, he's a sophomore who one the job midway through last year. His passer rating is about 180 over the past 13 games, last year and this year. He's more of a pocket passer and is very accurate. He hurt his thumb in the Pitt game and so the backup played in the next two game. Terrance Cain is the backup, he was a JC transfer from Blinn JC in Texas. His record is 9-1 in 10 games and he is a much better runner. Neither will turn the ball over much, though that was the problem that got cain Benched last year, fumbles while running.

We have two running backs. Matt Asiata is a power back, he hurt his knee last year and was granted a medical redshirt. He did play in the Alabama game and is a big strong runner. Eddie Wide started last year after Asiatia was hurt and is more of a break-away threat, but he is also very strong and can power inside. The third back, Sausin Shakerin, has been out most of the year with a concussion and in his place Beau Burton, a RS freshman scat back has been getting a few carries. It is a strong running group.

Wide Recievers: The go to guy this year is Jereme Brooks a 185 pounder that is lightening quick. Watch for him to make catches in the middle and make a lot of people miss with his quicks. Devonte Christopher is a former QB that is very fast and has good hands. He can become bored if not involved early and therefore is somewhat inconsistent. Shaky Smithson is another fast wide out and is a punt returner that can be very dangerous, he already has two returns for TDs. We also have a number of other good receivers including two JC transfers, Dexter Ransom, a huge receiver out of Blinn JC and Mo Lee, who scored the first time he touched the ball on a reverse.

Tight Ends: Utah has started using the tight end more this year and we have three good one, look for them on seam routes, particularly if you guys are in zone coverage.

Utah runs a spread, but with a lot of option in the package. The goal is to get the ball to play makers in space. They operate from a number of different formations and you will see reverses, shovel (or Utah passes), as well as dives and wildcat formation runs. With our QB and recievers Utah is not one dimensional and they will try to balance the run and pass as much as possible, but they are pretty good at recognizing what the defense is giving them and taking advantage of it.

Defense:

Utah runs a 4-3 defense and relies primarily on man coverage. The D line is big, good and deep. They will typically use 8 players rotating in the game, but have used up to 12 with no drop off noticable. This may be because of the level of competiton, but it may just be they are that good.

Linebackers. We have three new Linebackers this year, but they are all fast and do have playing experience. Chaz Walker was leading the nation in tackles for a couple of weeks, but that has been more spread out amongst all three backers as the year has wound on.

Utah's best cover guy is Brandon Burton and he is as good as it gets. Lamar chapman, the other corner is also good, but has less experience. Brian Blechen is a Freshman safety, but he is learning fast. He reminds a lot of people of Eric Weddle, now playing for the Chargers, and he made the INT in overtime of the Pitt game. Justin Taplin-Ross, the other safety is also very good and a senior. We expected him to be good so he gets somewhat forgotten with the rise of Blechen, but he does have a couple of picks in the last couple of games.

Utah will play a press man to man for the most part and bring in a nickle corner for a linebacker in passing situations. They will also blitz frequently, you'll see more of them as the game wears on and Kalani Sitake, the D Coodinator, gets a feel for what you guys are running in certain situations.

The whole staff is very good and making adjustments both in game and at half time, which may be their real strength. This makes the game pretty fun to watch to see how they will respond to challenges from the opposition.

Look forward to seeing you guys on Saturday.

Winner should get choice of wives!
They can thank their lucky stars that there are no Italian Mormons. Thanks guys for the breakdown of Utah, but is there any area you guys aren't good? I'm starting to get a complex already and it's barely Monday.

Only IMO, but we go to sleep when we get ahead, we fumble too much, and commit too many penalties. If we keep those under control, the team should be good. Run defense was soft in the middle last year, but not anymore. LBs are inexperienced so you might have success on plays that force them to make a play. D-line has been very disruptive so far, but at times, should have put more pressure on the pass.

In short, we need to control turnover ratio and penalties. Others may have different ideas.

I do say, it's nice getting respect from a top 10 team's fanbase. You're some great fans. Looking forward to the game this weekend.

Iowa State is "a classic Big 12 team."-Utah coach Kyle Whittingham

That quote confused me. First, Has Utah played a Big 12 team? Second, What is a classic Big 12 team? Third, should I be happy with that quote? Fourth, Kyle doesn't sound like a head coach name, and I don't know why.

Utah fans sure like to type a lot, but thanks for your time and insight.

1. This isn't last season. Just ask Texas.

2. Utah has beaten one team that has more than one win; Pittsuburgh.

Pitt: 2-2 (wins against New Hampshire and FIU)
UNLV: 1-4 (win against New Mexico)
New Mexico: 0-5
San Jose St: 1-4 (win against Southern Utah)

We've lost to 2 teams, both of those teams are currently undefeated. None of the teams we've beaten have a losing record.

I don't see anything that makes me believe Utah is a better team than Texas Tech or Northern Illinios, let alone us. This isn't to say I think they are not well coached or that they do not have equal or better talent. They haven't played nearly the caliber of opponents we have. They should be better than avg. using lesser teams to help perfect their execution.

This will be a good game. I am also a realist. I have no clue what is going to happen in this game. But given the adversity we have faced thus far and that the game is in Ames, it wouldn't surprise me at all if we came away with a victory.

Iowa has a loss. Sorry, but can't let Iowa being called undefeated pass.

Nebraska hasn't played anyone better than Utah has yet. Utah's best teams lately have been much better than Nebraska's best teams lately.

Yet I don't see any "Nebraska's not for real" posts from ISU fans.

If ISU players and coaches have the same attitude about Utah as our fans on this board, we are going to lose by 47 points. My fellow ISU fans, what is the harm in seeing that Utah is a team that has ran the table and won BCS games in blowout fashion recently, accepting they are a #10 team right now, and hoping we score a big upset of a #10 team. I just don't get the rational behind tearing down an opponent. If Utah doesn't deserve #10, Nebraska should be more like #23 instead of #6.

I didn't read it as "Utah isn't that good", I read it as "we're the best team Utah has played", and that's probably accurate. I thought Pitt would be very solid, but they have QB play that makes Tiller look like John Elway.

Utah is a really good team. We can still beat them. That doesnt make them worse, it makes us better. the UNLV team Utah beat is pretty good even though they have only 1 win. if youve watched them play, they are not that bad. and Pitt has struggled, but i wouldnt say they suck by any means.
