Boxing gurus: My friends and I were discussing this the other night. Who is the 3rd biggest name in boxing? What upcoming fights are worth checking out? Who is the next up and coming superstar?

Only guy I really follow is Anthony Joshua, won the gold medal a few years ago and I think he's currently 10-0 or maybe 11-0 now all by KO.

Gennady Golovki - aka Triple G - is a middleweight champion who is a tough exciting fighter that is a throwback to the glory years of boxing. If he fights Miguel Cotto, that will be a great fight

They suggest a few possible names for Mayweather's last fight.

  • Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KO): Would probably be the clear frontrunner if not for the fact that he won't fight in September due to Ramadan. There is a chance that Mayweather could push a fight back until November/December to accommodate Khan, but that would be entirely Mayweather's call, and it doesn't seem likely. Amir's last chance to face Floyd might have died when the Pacquiao fight was made.
  • Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KO): Young, hungry fighter, undefeated and has good power, plus a nice overall skill set. A good talker who has done his bit to put the matchup into the minds of boxing fans over the last year.
  • Kell Brook (34-0, 23 KO): Holds the only title that Mayweather doesn't claim at welterweight, but that probably doesn't matter much at all since Mayweather says he plans to give up all of his titles before his last fight.
  • Danny Garcia (30-0, 17 KO): Even though he's lost a little luster over his last three fights (two of which could be argued as gift victories), he is the undefeated champion at 140 pounds, and he's ready to go to 147. Plus, like, Angel Garciaand Floyd Mayweather Sr verbal battles? Come on.
  • Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34 KO): A fan favorite, an action fighter, and someone who has said he wanted the winner. What might kill this idea: Matthysse is with Golden Boy Promotions, and actually spurned Al Haymon to sign an extension with them earlier this year. Lucas might not be on Haymon's short list of people he wants to help make money.
Those are the guys we'll go with for the poll choices, but here are some other people who are professional boxers.

  • Genandy Golovkin (32-0, 29 KO): I mean, you know, it'd be interesting. And ballsy. So...
  • Bernard Hopkins (55-7-2, 32 KO): This crazy old man floated the idea of a catchweight fight with Mayweather in 2014, but, like, no.
  • Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KO): If he were to beat Khan on May 29, letting him out the cage against Mayweather is fathomable, I guess. I mean, Robert Guerrero fought Mayweather a couple years ago, why not?
  • Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KO): What better way to repay someone for his service in setting Mayweather up with opponents in 2011 and 2013?
  • Anthony Mundine (47-6, 26 KO): It's now or never, Floyd. Can you truly consider your legacy secure without fighting "The Man"? And maybe that "perforated eardrum" thing is only a diversion. Perhaps Floyd's team has already reached out.
  • Victor Ortiz (30-5-2, 23 KO): Yeah, he hasn't beaten anyone decent in four years. So what? Do you NOT want to see if he'll start a riot with a flagrant headbutt or dropkick?

I don't really believe September will be his last fight. IIRC, MGM is building a new arena that's supposed to open next May. You're telling me Floyd is going to turn down the opportunity to open a new arena and go for an even 50 wins?

Yeah, he's building hype right now but I don't think he opens that. I think he lets it build for a year or two before he goes for 50. The thing about doing that is to make even more money, it has to be a big fight, meaning he risks getting beat. If he gets to 49, I think he goes after the best that's out there.

I was wondering that too. He doesn't seem like a guy that would just tie Rocky Marciano...he wants to beat him. However, he is getting older and his passion for boxing is waning from what I've heard.

Probably Wladimir Klitschko. He's the reigning heavyweight champion in multiple associations/organizations. He's also engaged to Hayden Panettiere. They had a daughter back in late 2014.

Dumb question - why so many different belts for the same weight class?

Next 2 weeks on HBO are going to be awesome.

Canelo Alvaraz vs. James Kirkland will be a brutal slugfest and then the next week GGG fights again. He's middleweight Mike Tyson from Khazakstan who talks like Borat.

Also, keep an eye on Sergey Kovalev. He's been clearing out the light heavyweight division and is on a collision course with lineal champ Adonis Stephenson. Both guys have a ton of KO's.

Mayweather and/or Pac needs to fight him, like now. If he dies, he dies.

There is no 3rd boxer because boxing is dead.

This. Mayweather-Pacquiao is/was the best boxing can offer, and it was a dud. It'll continue on, but boxing's days as a relevant sport in this country hit zero with that fight.

I watched some pretty good Boxing the day before Easter. A damn good knockout in one of the fights, cannot remember the names.

It definitely wasn't a great match, but I still enjoyed it. Granted, I was told by people to expect a defensive battle.

This thread and others aren't existing and this conversation doesn't exist if that match didn't happen. Boxing may be dying, but it still got a push Saturday.

Sure, but if we'd not gotten the match, boxing could have kept riding the "we wish May-Pac would just happen" wave that's lasted for some time now. It got a push because everyone was excited that it was actually happening. Now that it proved to be a huge letdown, what does boxing really have left to sell, even as just suspense or "what if?" value? Nobody even wants a May-Pac rematch.

Because boxing is like a religion and not a sport. Seriously. You can start your own association and rank the fighters based on your own criteria. Then your association VP doesn't like it so he goes and starts his own association.

Only one of the big associations is based in the USA. I think one is based in Puerto Rico and another in some other small country. Seems fishy to me.

Boxing needs to be set up like a traditional tournament or even bull riding. The top boxers all fight every other month until there is a winner. Riner and repeat.

Allowing bowers to set up their own schedules and terms waters down the sport.

Floyd only has one fight left on his current deal with Showtime. That gets him to 49-0. He's obviously not going to negotiate another multi-fight deal at this point. But I agree with you, he'll go for 50. The difference is he'll be a free agent looking to sign a one-fight megadeal with the highest bidder for the right to promote 50-0.
