The following is a press release courtesy of the Big 12 Conference.

Big 12 Conference Commissioner Bob Bowlsby announced today that he will step away from the Commissioner’s chair later this year after a decade of leading the league and securing its long-term future as one of the five major collegiate athletics conferences. Bowlsby, a steady, influential voice for intercollegiate athletics, will remain Commissioner of the Big 12 until the appointment of a new Commissioner and will then, at the request of the Conference, transition to a new interim role with the Conference, subject to the mutual agreement of Bowlsby and the new Commissioner. “After more than 40 years of serving in leadership roles in intercollegiate athletics, including the last 10 with the Big 12, and given the major issues that college sports in general and the Big 12 specifically will address in the next several years, I have reached a natural transition point in my tenure as Commissioner, as well as...

Be careful with the Pollard to commish talk. If he moves up, IIRC, one of Campbell’s clauses kicks in and his buyout drops significantly. That is assuming that clause is stop a active part of his contract.

My thoughts exactly. He'd be a viable candidate.

He certainly has the profile and the bloody-mindedness.

Who is his replacement here?? Would he leave his buddy TJ? Is he looking for a career change at this stage in life?

Those are good questions. It seems like he has assembled a group of coaches he is comfortable with. Campbell, TJ, Bill, CJ, Dresser etc....
would he leave for a new challenge and a pay bump only he knows.

Too long a read for me beyond fist 5 paragraphs. Didn't see any mention of Oliver Luck. I thought when he was brought in last summer, he might be the Commissioner in waiting.

Doesn't surprise me too much. The new Commissioner should negotiate the next TV contract, because he's the one who is going to have to live with it over the next decade.

This just in, assistant SEC commissioner to BIG12 to set up 60 million per school alliance. BIG12 brings big time basketball, track and field and wrestling . Football sets the SEC up for long term success.

There aren't a lot of examples of member school ADs becoming conference commissioner. Almost seems like a conflict of interest. Although I looked it up and guess John Swofford was at UNC.

Seems like it would be wise for the Big 12 to consider somebody with a television/media industry background.

Yeah, maybe even someone experienced with how some of these pro leagues are getting part of their content on mainstream streaming platforms like Amazon. I'd think Netflix or HBO Max would want a dog in the fight for sports. Paramount+ actually seems to be making a play for a well rounded sports streaming service and they don't have to worry about stealing viewers away from their sports cable networks like Disney/ESPN.

People think of Pollard because they wish we'd have had commissioners that were half as fierce defending the Big 12 as Pollard has been fighting to improve ISU. It would be a nice quality to have in this era of backstabbing and money grabbing, some guy who just refuses for the conference to take a back seat.

Seems like the writing was on the wall when the traitors left and Bowlsby had not a clue anything was going on. Wouldn't be surprised if the conference goes after Aresco or Oliver Luck

Lol. T&F and wrestling. I’ve got news for ya, WBB is a bigger attraction.

Lots to consider IMO with this news including Luck as a potential or likely replacement.

I figured Bowlsby would stay on until the R8 settled with ESPN/OUT on the timing of their exit to the SEC. I am still under the impression that both ESPN and OUT want to be the SEC for the 2023 FB season and will pay the price to do so whether it be a lump sum cash settlement for exit/GOR fees or ESPN funding migration of the R8 to other P5 conferences (keeping in mind the B10 and P12 do their new TV deals before the B12).

According to an OK State site, the B12 Board forced out Bowlsby and this wasn't done on Bowlsby's terms which adds more intrigue.

JP won't be the permanent replacement even if he wanted the job. If a long term replacement is hired with the currently projected 12 schools, it will be someone with prior media experience similar to that of Kliavkoff.
