Some interesting and fun stuff in Blum's article about turnovers. 3rd and anything over 5 yards killed us. Seems we would like 3rd and long, but its our Achilles heel. Poor decisions (i.e. mistakes) were critical in this outcome. We can talk about the kick return and ensuing horrible punt. Another I would add is some really bad tackling by one or two defenders. The one that stood out to me (boy he had an over all bad game!) was good old #2 Datrone Young. We can focus on his taking out our own punt returner, but I counted 4-5 wiffs on open field tackles that really hurt us.

We had 418 total yards and only 9 3rd down attempts... Our offense did something right.

Iowa State being in the top 30 for both yards per play and yards allowed per play is a nice statistic to reference. However, the more important statistic is (excluding overtime points) ISU is averaging 15 points per game. Biggest reason for this is penalties and turnovers (mistakes). Mistakes and turnovers have been a problem through two games. To use the saying, " Once is a Fluke, Twice is a Coincidence, Three Times is a Trend". I'm betting that we'll be seeing a trend in the third game this year. Hard to win games when you don't put points on the board.

More Stats (excluding the 3 overtimes) through 2 games:

Total Possessions: 19
Possessions ending in a TD: 3 = 16% of total possessions
Possessions ending in points: 8 = 42% of total possessions
Possessions ending in fumbles: 3 = 16% of total possessions

We also had 3 balls we should have picked off on defense in the Iowa game and I thought there might have been one or two in the UNI game. Hoping this trend turns around. We did get one lucky fumble recovery against UNI.

Having the second tackler--depending on game situation--come in and punch/grab'strip at the ball is a margin detail we are working on.
Isn't this stuff we all learn in 7th grade playing?
I don't get the tip drill fail we had that game too....seems beyond the statistics.
Hope we're saving the turnovers for Texas....that alliterates.
