***Big 10 Thread***

I told you why Orr got in. 6 Tournament appearances, a Sweet 16 and he created Hilton Magic.

The name Johnny Orr has become synonymous with collegiate basketball success. During his tenure at Iowa State, Orr's teams recorded five 20-win seasons, six NCAA tournament berths, and had seven players drafted by the National Basketball Association (NBA). Orr witnessed a 95-percent increase in attendance, as sold-out crowds at Hilton Coliseum became the rule.

To put Orr's accomplishments in perspective, one must turn the page back to his arrival. In Orr's first season, attendance increased nearly 3,000 fans per game. In his fourth season (1983-84), ISU finished 16-13 and earned a bid to the NIT, the first time in 40 years that Iowa State was invited to play in post-season play. The 1984-85 campaign saw the Cyclones improve to 21-13 mark and earn a bid to the NCAA tournament.

His 1985-86 squad shattered several records, including most wins in a season, and reached the NCAA "Sweet 16". The Cyclones played in the Big Eight Tournament's championship game following an undefeated home season in which ISU averaged a capacity 14,020 fans per game. Orr was treated to one of the highlights of his coaching career when his underdog Cyclones beat Big Ten Conference champ Michigan, his former school, in the NCAA Midwest Regional on national television.

The 1987-88 Cyclones raced to a 16-2 start and were ranked as high as 10th nationally. ISU again earned a berth in the NCAA tournament and won 20 games for the third time in four seasons. Standout Jeff Grayer finished his career with 2,502 points and was a second team All-America choice by the Associated Press. The team set 11 school marks, including averaging a record 14,238 fans per game. Orr's teams went on to NCAA Tournament berths in 1989, 1992 and 1993.

And that is statue worthy? For an elite basketball school?

K State and Texas?

Edit
Wait, you didn't watch the Iowa game this year? It didn't seem "very quiet" that game.

Edit that, three games. I didn't think Hilton was that loud for this game. Probably because neither team is very good this year. Though Wigginton and Lard tried to get the crowd pumped up.

What games have you watched?

So the two games that seemed very quiet was when the students were on break and 25,000+ fans were in Memphis? It's not a contest between you and Buddy to be the biggest idiot.

One Sweet 16 in 14 seasons is Statue Worthy at an elite bball school? Yikes!

THere is probably a good case study here for business school students.

Take two midwest college basketball venues -
At site A, average attendance is about 9,000. They routinely give away $10 of free pizza to reach that level.
At site B, average attendance is about 14,000 and they can charge $5 for $1 worth of ice cream in the middle of the winter.

Both arenas are about the same size and school enrollments are similar

Please elaborate on product and marketing strategies for each organization that could lead to such disparity despite being only 100 miles apart.

A few here and there mostly flipping back and forth. Iowa game and a few others. I watched the second half last night, but that was on the road.

You said you saw two games and then you said three. Which games were they?

Choosing two games over break while 25k to 30k Cyclones were possibly on their way to Memphis or on their way back?

I find it funny how Hawk fans are ragging on Orr getting ISU to six tourneys after a 40 year dumpster fire and don't see it as a big deal, then turn around and state how tough Fran had it rebuilding after the three year dumpster fire of Lick. Can't have it both ways.

Unless he has mediacom there's only a select few he has watched. Pretty sure it was Texas, K State, and Iowa.

Yep that's what I'm thinking and that's called being obsessed when you watch ISU basketball over the Rose Bowl as an Iowa fan
