Noone is talking about this little gem that came out before the Big 10 media days. Big 10 wants more time to get feedback before expanding the CFP.

That would throw a huge wrench into the OU and UT to the SEC works.

If the Big XII goes away, then we would be down to four power conferences. No need to expand the playoffs and the Rose Bowl keeps it's importance.

And the SEC just scewed itself by making it harder for its members to make the CFP.

Thoughts?

I think the Big 10 would do it just to screw with the SEC.

Not arguing but how does the Rose Bowl keep its importance since all of those bowls have only become less relevant?

I'm hopeful for anything that might ruin this OU/TX to the SEC deal.

Don't put it past them to just put 4 SEC teams in the 4 team playoff though.

I hear what your saying but I’m not gonna trust what that re-rod has to say. It’s just whatever Ohio St wants him to say.

I wouldn't either. Why do you think every pre season poll Alabama is #1 with about 3 other SEC schools in the top ten.....and the rest of the league in the top 25. They are going to make sure come h*** or high water the SEC is represented in the playoffs.

Great but this isnt up to the Big 10...Committee votes on it and you better believe every G5 member who represents will be voting yes for expansion..

Its not happening, its over. Hell Bob said last week nothing was coming with realignment when UT and OU have been in cahoots for months.

That's what really ticks me off. OU and TX have had to be talking behind closed doors about this for quite a while now..... and they just show up to Big 12 media days like everything is just fine and dandy. They are the lowest of the low.

It maintains the status quo as a NY6 Bowl. They get to keep the Big 10 Pac 12 tradition in years it's not hosting the CFP.

can you blame them? their culture does not fit big10. especially after the covid season stuff. they had to align themselves for the best of their programs.

thats why isu should be mother ******* the rest of the big12 to make their spot. (unless they need KU to get into the big10)

I have serious doubts that ole Bobby really knew nothing about any of this.

And if he really didn’t have the knowledge that atleast something was wrong, then he wasn’t doing his damn job.

It would NEVER happen. So follow me into fantasy land if you desire. Also since this whole realignment business is about primarily football, this scenario is with that sport specifically in mind.

What if the B1G, Pac12, ACC, and remaining BXII absorbed the top G5 teams. Kept a somewhat similar bowl structure and had the four champions from each conference in a playoff for a championship.

The non-con regular season games would be amongst each other (sort of like 'pre-bowls'). The playoff rep would be the conference champs, therefore scheduling 'cupcakes' wouldn't be necessary. Non-con is 'meaningless' except for the fun matchups and new/old rivalry potential.

Bowl teams would be those .500+, bowl matchups would be on a rotating 'lottery and draft' (i.e. bowl games draft the teams they'd like to see matched up, could potentially add in some of the best remaining G5 teams on a season by season basis). This eliminates the 'affiliation' aspect and ensures 'higher quality' matchups.

The exception to the 'bowl draft' are the NY6 games. For the NY6 games, two would be 'reserved' as playoff games. The remaining four would be championship game no.2s and the top team from each conference not represented in the CC game. These would rotate through annually similar to the current playoff structure (including Natty game).

Let the SEC have their 'national championship' and keep TeXa$ too.

Once the alliance thing accomplishes its purpose of delaying the CFP expansion, opening up media rights to said CFP beyond ESPN, and limiting the power of the SECESPN in terms of determining how an expanded CFP is structured, I'd be willing to bet that the B1G, ACC, PAC are going to do what's in their best financial interests. I have a hard time seeing the B1G agree to some kind of fair and equitable structure and process among the four other conferences, just because it's operating from such a disproportionate position of financial strength compared to the others.

If that’s the case, which I believe it is, the Pac12 and the ACC got caught up in a fool’s errand with this Alliance. This hasn’t really limited the SEC power- the other conferences need an expanded playoffs more than the SEC. If anything this may just increase the chance the SEC wields its power.

The delay in expansion and no further movement may be hurting OuT, but the SEC benefits from more bidders on CFP, and dominates the current playoffs. They got ESPN to help broker a deal while still seeing competitive bidding on CFP, plus no further movement, making it easier to pull from the ACC (easier to get the conference to dissolve at 14 rather than 16).

The only move available to limit the SEC imo is the BIG adding the ACC brands the SEC values. With ESPN on the other side of the GOR, a few invites to the ACC football schools, and it’s an espn move away from being no GOR. That’s assuming UVa wouldn’t twist UNC’s arm to go to the SEC to prevent VT from going.

I'm sure they knew this, but what other option did they have?

The SEC is completely in bed with ESPN and ESPN is the driving force for that duo. The SEC will not have any part in facilitating open bidding on the expanded CFP.

And ESPN, not the SEC, will call the shots on any raiding of the ACC by the SEC prior to expiration of the ACC's GOR which is essentially controlled by ESPN.

I mean, it is likely they know the Alliance is just the first step in the BIG selecting its new programs. Best to have the equivalent of a fan vote in that.

Because the Pac12, if fighting to survive, should want an expanded playoffs. Sell equity in your network, get leverage with carriers, then add new huge markets in central time zone, and form an Alliance with the SEC, and if not them, the two other non-P2s.

But the SEC likely wants the BIG pulling Pac12 teams, which helps college football salvage anything of value on that coast, while freeing up the SEC to target the ACC.

I don’t think this could have gone better for the SEC as a conference, even if OU is going to take a step back
