I'll be taking my son to the Hoiberg shooting camp in 2 weeks. We'll be going to Hickory Park and Great Plains Sauce and Dough. But I don't know if there is a good steak restaurant in the area (chain restaurants don't count). And I really don't want to drive to Conrad or Des Moines.

Flame: The state of blazing combustion

Skewer: A long pin for holding meat in position while it's being roasted

Flame 'N' Skewer: The best restaurant in the Ames area

Open Flame in Gilbert, otherwise might as well go to Texas Roadhouse. none of them will be spectacular, as fat as steak goes. But will be ok.

And the worst commercial ever.

I used tho like the prime rib at aunt maudes...still there?
Yep they still have prime rib. Was very close to getting it for dinner last night but opted for the tri tip. I wasnt ready to fork over $33. (They may not even serve it during the week anyways)

At least they don't whisper "enjoy your adventure at Flame N Skewer!" at the end. :skeptical:
Yes but I will take ISU's marketing over EIU's anyday

For what it's worth - I think I've had my last meal at The Open flame in Gilbert. A couple months ago we experienced nightmarish service, wrong orders and a very dirty resturant experience. Kind of a bummer as we've been going there for 20 years. It's seems to have been on a downward slide for awhile, but the last visit was ridiculous.

If we're in town and wanting steak, we always head to Cafe Northwest. It has been about two yrs since we were last there, so maybe someone can confirm with a more recent review. They use Greek seasoning and appear to broil (at least part of the time) in butter. Get the side of Greek spaghetti and Greek salad. Good stuff!!

Dublin Bay also has a very good steak there in my opinion. I would say it's one of our favorite places to go in ames. I'm in my 30's and it seems kind of childish but they have damn good cheese balls there too.

All the more reason for the Oddfellows guy to reopen the Italian place he had out in West Ames. Obviously not at that location, but somewhere else in town.

The place behind tip top. I have no idea if it is any good.

P.S. I just realized that is cafe northwest. I have heard very good things about their steak.

There was a great steak house in State Center back in the day. don't know if it's still there or not.

I don't know about steak, but I had THE BEST fish taco at the cafe. I haven't ever really had fish taco before, but it was the best damn taco I have ever had...... period. If you have kids, they eat for like 3.50. That is a kids steak dinner with kettle chips, fresh fruit, and a cookie(they also have other dishes too). We ate there the other night (two adults and 4 kids) for just under 60 bucks.

Haven't been to the NW cafe in a couple of years as we have blacklisted it due to poor service and never really liking anything on the menu. It's funny too, because we used to live in Mason city and loved the NW steakhouse(same owners). That guy that owns odd-fellows does par restaurants.... w hate oddfelows, but that Italian place in w. Ames wasn't too bad.

Myself.... I haven't found a steak anywhere as good as I think they taste fresh of my own grill, so I don't usually eat steak at a restaurant. However, for the price, TX roadhouse isn't bad.

If cheese balls are childish, shoot me now.

I didn't realize that both Northwest steakhouses have the same owner. The one in Mason is probably my favorite steakhouse.
