What have you found to be most effective at keeping away mosquitoes, gnats, etc?

I am wondering specifically about outdoor patios/porches/decks and so forth rather than something you spray on yourself--but if you think those are best, include them as well.

Citronella candles? Tiki torches? Zappers? What do you use?

TIA

I use Tempo around the exterior of the house to keep bugs away/out of the house, works pretty well but I didn't know it could be used for gnats and mosquitoes

Use it at hog sites to keep mosquitoes and flies from biting the animals. Little more expensive of an option, but fairly safe product.

These can help...

I used a recipe that called for blue mouthwash, Epson salt and three cans of stale beer. Sprayed it around my deck. Supposed to apply twice each summer.

Been using this for the last few years. Works pretty well. Supposed to last 12 weeks but I apply every 8.

Used a Thermacell for the first time Friday night and it seemed to work. The pad has a 4 hour life which sounded like plenty of time until we used it for grilling and eating dinner and then a bonfire. Haven't looked up how much replacement pads are yet but the cost might add up quick.

Wife found this recipe and we have tried it this year on our whole lawn. Seems to be working well but the city also sprayed about a week after we applied, so hard to say if it was the mouthwash mix or the city spraying that is helping.

Used the Off or Cutter hose end stuff and seems to help in the short term. These insecticide lanterns for the deck do also work. It's not some crap like citronella, probably something toxic as hell cause it works. Good to have to drag them out soon, weather is currently making mosquitoes with this rain.

I bought a fogger and try to fog every so often. I feel like it slightly helps, though I probably don't use it enough.

Pretty fun thing, though :D

A fan has been the best deterrent. I bought a big swamp-cooler Portacool fan and have not dealt with a single mosquito since. And the patio stays really pleasant even on uncomfortably hot days.
