Casey’s just bought Buchanan Energy and Buckys Convenience Store for 580 million. I assume this is different than the Bucees talked about in this thread?

Yes, Bucky's is an omaha area gas station chain with most stores in Illinois. A lot different than Bucees.

They took a unique, albeit outdated, logo and made it very generic. If I had no knowledge of Casey's and you just showed me that logo, I would think it's a fast food chicken place.
What if you had no knowledge of Casey's and were shown the old logo? That didn't really scream convenience store either.

I've grown up with Casey's. My wife and I always thought their corporate headquarters should have had a red plastic "roof" around the top. But Quick Star's stores are bigger with a bigger selection. I'm not sure what the economics are in maintaining a bigger facility and carrying more inventory, but they are impressive. We took a car trip to Maine and really missed the big convenience stores we have in the Midwest.

Old logo said "General Store" so it obviously wasn't a fast food place. But everyone within 500 miles knows what a Casey's is anyway.

Oh yeah. If someone bought out Bucee's I think the state of Texas would declare war. There aren't many of them but they are definitely unique. I've never seen a gas station be so busy at 7 PM on a Saturday night.

Their white cheddar jalapeno popcorn is also very addictive.

Huh. I lived in central IL for a couple years and was on the road quite a bit through the area between I-80, Bloomington and Peoria. I’ve never heard of them.

Almost everything was shell, Marathon, Thornton’s or Circle K with a few Casey’s spread out here and there.

Are you the one that has the ISU shed along I-74?

Personally, I love Casey’s, and use them whenever I am traveling. However, we don’t have Casey’s in St Louis. Nor do we have Kwik Star. So, for everyday use based on where I live, I have to go with QT.

also, the poll won’t let me vote on mobile for some reason

I found a Casey's across the river in Alton a few years ago. Kinda surprised me.

What's amazing about the industry is that if we had this conversation 20 years ago, no one would be saying Casey's or Kum & Go. Quik Trip was king and if you happened to find a Kwik Trip/Kwik Star on your ventures in NE Iowa, you'd speak highly of them as well. QT's market has eroded here with several stores in the DM Metro closing in the past several years.

All I can really say about Kwik Star is that if they ever step up their game on pizza, there's no stopping them. It's their only weak link at the moment. Casey's needs to reevaluate their sandwich offerings. And Kum & Go? They've got something with their premium heat and serve sandwiches but need to retool the lineup. Their sriracha chicken is awesome, their breaded chicken...a waste of money. And many store don't carry the siracha. Their pizza is much better than what it used to be but still needs work. HyVee has potential, but much of what they carry is overpriced for what it is.

After how Kum and Go treated the Cyclones on twitter after our loss to Iowa a few years back I only use their restrooms when needed. I never buy anything there, just leave some stuff.

And their gas prices are always high if they can get away with it. That was one of the footholds that allowed Casey's to gain traction in Iowa originally. Before then small town gas stations made it a habit of pricing their gas considerably higher than in neighboring towns and cities with competition. Casey's generally matches going gas prices in those bigger towns in all their small town locations in the vicinity.
