Choose the 5 former Clones, by position, that you would put on the floor if you HAD to win the game.

PG - Tinsley
SG - Hornacek
SF - Grayer
PF - Fizer
C - Cato

I think Grayer and Hornacek would chew up Hoiberg and Willoughby. Grayer gives you a better 3. He could drive it and was an unbelievable athlete prior to injury.

Grayer blew them all away! Keep in mind his Sr. year he was not only the Big 8 Defensive Player of the Year but also lead the conference in Scoring. He did it all...too bad they gave the MVP to Manning. Where is Gary Thompson on any of these lists?

Thompson is good but where are you going to put him. Hornacek would be the only guy I would move but its hard to say he wont do what you want at shooting guard. Their arent many guys in the history of the NBA that shot it better him.

My answer is going to be contradictory to a response I posted relating to the "best cyclone basketball player ever." I responded with Jeff Hornacek. However, Mr. Hornacek is not on my list. If I had to choose 5 players to WIN THE GAME, I'd take our 2000 Elite 8 Team hands-down.
PG- Tinsley
G- Nurse
G- Horton
SF- Stevie Johnson
PF - Fizer
Those guys basically "breezed" through the Big XII Tourney and were on their way as National Champs if it hadn't been for a series of VERY QUESTIONABLE calls late in the game against MSU. :frown3qg: Those guys did not get rattled, they were mentally tough, confident, and they won more games in a season than any other BBall team in ISU History!
I love the Roland Rocket, Smith, Grayer, Hornacek and Hoiberg - but the above 5 were a team that complimented each other almost perfectly!

PG- Tinsley
SG- Hornaceck/Hoiberg
SF- Grayer (best Clone ever)
PF- Fizer
C- Alexander (I would take him over Cato)

Remember I'm a young fan, just 21 years old....

G- Jamaal Tinsley
G- Dedrick Willoughby
G- Fred Hoiberg
F- Marcus Fizer
C- Kelvin Cato

Honorable mention
Stevie Johnson (My oh my was he a hustler...)
Julius Mikalek (Can't spell his name to this day, but he was one of the first players I can remember watching and I loved watching him... a tall guy that could shoot.)
Jacy Holloway (People can call him overrated, but I loved his unassuming personality and how he didn't care EVER how many points were next to his name in the box score)
Justice Thigpen (That kid could shoot.... and I can BARELY remember him : )

On second thought, these were probably my "Favorite" players, not in particular the ones I would have on the floor to win the game, though I do think my original five were clutch in their own right.

I could name alot more, but I put down the first ones that came to mind...

Nice thread idea though, by the way.

How that team was a #2 seed I'll never know.
No kidding... while the Big XII may have been slightly down, the Clones RACED through the season, and the two games they lost in conference play were a buzzer beater desperation shot and an overtime comeback attempt... what a team.

No way do you take Alexander over Cato, Big Vic did not know what defense was. Cato with Tinsley, Hornacek, Grayer and Fizer has to be the best team.

We need to have 2 teams. One for before a certain year and one for after. I can't compare to the older guys but the newer ones I could. Maybe from 95 and before? And 95 to present? To be fair the game has also changed a lot and that could affect the players you use. Just my opinion.

I'm with you... admittedly, as a current college student, I really don't remember back past the late Johnny Orr years with Justice Thigpen.
