Best Cell Service inside game and tailgaiting?

It would be nice if ISU could work back with some of the carriers on some sort ofb in stadium DAS solution. Or maybe just go it themselves with in stadium wi-fi.

In stadium WiFi is a pretty crazy expense for something that will be used 6 or 7 times per year. It makes sense in bigger markets where the buildings get used all the time but I think the department can probably spend the money more wisely here.

They can charge for it though

Looking at a multi-million dollar investment plus upkeep. I'm not sure you'd ever have the demand to make your money back. Maybe I'm an outlier but I kind of like separating myself from the world when I'm tailgating and at a game...

I think Wifi in the parking lots could be a huge draw. Lots of people would like to use some sort of streaming solution to watch games while tailgating.

Those aren't remotely comparable.

Yeah...that's a 10 year payback completely ignoring maintenance costs not to mention I'm guessing Jamie would rather spend the money elsewhere.

Maybe you don't need to make a call or send a text. Lots of people do. It's 2019 and that's how people communicate.

$25/season ticket at 46K tickets, is $1.1 million. Would it cost over $1 million to install wifi at the stadium? Surely, there is no way it would cost $10 million to install wifi for a 10 year pay back. ISU gets 1 gig internet service, pretty sure its fiber backbone on the aureon network.

I was at Camp Randall a couple years ago and a guy in athletics at Wisconsin told us it was about $10M for their wi-fi install. Something like $13M for both Camp Randall and the Kohl Center but the vast majority was Camp Randall.

This article seems to be in the same neighborhood:

If people were looking for in-stadium as well as parking lot coverage I'm guessing $10M would get blown out of the water. The other problem is you'd still be screwed on texts (but would be able to use something like Snapchat to message).

If you use Imessage, hangout or whatsapp, you'd be just fine :).

Thanks for the providing the information that is very interesting! I was just talking the stadium itself but agree if the lots were included, that would greatly increase the costs.

That $10 million Wisconsin spent included a lot more than just wifi though. " upgrades to replace and enhance the underlying infrastructure for the venues – core switching, Wi-Fi access points, an IPTV system, cabling, electrical power and HVAC improvements — $11 million for the whole package"

Camp Randall is fairly dungeon-y so I'd assume it could be done cheaper at JTS with how open it is but the catch is I'm guessing you'd be doing at minimum the S lots and maybe all paved parking too.

Somebody needs to start a temporary WiFi company like Musco(?) does for temporary lights.
