I don't believe we'd be in a lot different situation than we are now. Ohio State is a whole different animal. I worked with a guy who's kid gave up a scholarship at Northern Illinois and Miami Ohio, to go play at Ohio State. They had a family history there, but none the less, he chose to go sit on the bench and pay for school instead of going somewhere where he had a good shot of playing.
When you have that kind of pull, talent can over come a lot. I'm not saying we don't have talent at ISU, but what's at schools like Ohio State, Alabama etc., that's on a completely different level than we are used to. And they have it in depth there as well.
What I got form this is if I didn't have experience with Tom Herman, I would think he is a very good OC, and that we should try to hire him in the off season. Just goes to show how difficult it is to find a good OC.
Agreed. Not sure if folks saw this article on Chip Kelly, but it is a great read to show how he developed his system using what was in front of him (at a small school), because he had to do something different with the talent he had and how that has really changed the game.
In Rhoads entire time at Iowa State, Herman was the one coach who legitimately moved up the coaching ladder. Wells doesn't count in my opinion because he works for his brother at Utah State and doesn't even call the plays. This is my main frustration with the coaching staff. A lot of them have flashy stuff in their bios but if they were such great coaches, why are they all moving backwards in their careers from being coordinators to position coaches and from major football powers to Iowa State?
Pretty sure the only guy on our staff who was ever a BCS coordinator and isn't now is Sturdy. Beyond that it's worth pointing out that Chis Ash is now DC at Arkansas and Bobby Elliott went to Notre Dame. Other than that I think we have some solid coaches who simply want to coach here.
I'll give you Ash but he was here one year and had ties to Iowa State when he was hired. Bobby Elliot proves my point---guy was rumored to possibly be our D-Coordinator or even head coach when he was brought in and now he is the safeties coach at Notre Dame. I guess when I look at the current staff, I don't worried about any of them being hired away by other programs. I don't see a superstar assistant coach climbing the ranks.
I'm pretty sure that had more to do with Urban Meyer bringing that with him from Florida by way of retirement than it having anything to do with Herman.
