Bears sign Orton to 1 year extension

Resigning Grossman and extending Orton - while Briggs and Berrian are going to test (and do quite well) free agency.

Yeah, that pretty much sounds exactly like the Bears.

I kind of think Orton should have moved on to be a #2 somewhere... Instead of a #3 with CHI.

He's not the #3 in Chicago now. I'm guessing he will go into training camp as the #1 and the battle will be between him and Rex for the starting job.

I wonder how much they paid him for the extension. He is only making around $460,000 now.

Being #3 gives him more time to concentrate on his fun time:

Wonderful, 2 of our 3 awful quarterbacks are back under contract for next season. I was getting worried someone else would swoop in and snatch Rex or Kyle away from us...

I think the Bears and the Vikings are going to fight for last place in the North this coming fall. It will all depend on who makes the best (or worst depending on how you look at it) moves this off-season.

If the Bears loose out on their 3 free-agents - I'd pick them as the favorite for that spot.

I think they're going to be contenders, a good defense can get a team a long way. Like 2 years ago.

But the issue is, that defense lost a lot of it's luster last year. And, it may be losing at least one key player.

Combine that with losing a star on offense and so far doing nothing to upgrade a position of dire need (QB) and the durability/toughness issues at RB - yeah - the Bears are going to contend - but I don't think it will be what Bear fans would like to be contending for.

This extension tells me that the Bears are buying one more year of out these quarterbacks. I think they will make a move to draft a quarterback that they think can be their future (Matt Ryan?) and give him a year to learn and sit.

As a Packers fan, let's hope they continue the nonsense.

Consider the injuries last year: brown, harris brown. Thats why they lost luster. I know the offense needs a lot of work but I think that the defense can carry the team just like any other year. Plus the lions wont be that good either.

About the only thing I liked in those articles was the prospect of signing Alan Faneca... Well, that and Dorsey slipping to the Bears...

Did they also sign that awful looking thing that Orton wears on his face? I would have made that part of the deal. We wil sign you but, dude, you gotta shave that thing off...

I think they are trying to ink Chris Chandler for a 3rd qb.

Nothing saying those guys will be healthy this year - the Bears are always fighting injuries on defense it seems - year in and year out. Yet each year, fans think this will be the year it changes (reminds me of Prior and Wood).

Plus, the Bears traded away their one reliable part of their offense last year and you can directly see how it hurt 'em. They have a pair of backs currently that aren't durable and don't seem willing to get the tough yards they need to play their usual defensive football and run out the clock on offense. The offensive line was less than great last year too.

So, without that dominating running game - you're asking your sub-par QB to do more for you. If Berrian goes, well - that sub-par QB will be made to look even worse.

I think the Lions are ready to start getting their act together. They fell apart down the stretch - but I like them to be better than most think this fall.

Injuries happen for every team, every year. The Bears are no different. But last year they did have an abnormal amount of injuries:

Vasher missed a ton of time. As did Tillman. Mike Brown basically missed the season. Urlacher was playing with an injured neck. Briggs missed several games. Tommie Harris was injured towards the end of the year. Those injuries are too much to overcome without a powerful offense.
