"Beardshear’s legacy includes fostering the start of athletic programs, increasing faculty 25 to 78 while enrollment quadrupled during his 11-year tenure. The Cyclones nickname also came about in 1895 during Beardshear’s time as President. In 1938 the central building on campus was named Beardshear Hall to honor “The Father of Iowa State.” #IowaOTD #IowaHistoryDaily"

Born on an Ohio farm, Beardshear grew up fast and signed up to serve in the Fourth Army Corps in the Army of the Cumberland as a 14-year old. After finishing his service at the conclusion of the war, he eventually went on to attend Otterbein College where he earned his degree.

Serving as a pastor for the United Brethren before heading to Yale to complete his education. Soon after Beardshear headed west to Iowa to work as President at Western College in Toledo, Iowa. An eight year stint in Tama County, Beardshear headed to West Des Moines to guide the young school district before becoming President of Iowa State University on February 25, 1891.

But wait, there's more!

After serving as Western College President for eight years, Beardshear was hired as Superintendent of West Des Moines, Iowa schools. Beardshear became President of the Iowa Agricultural College, now known as Iowa State University, on February 25, 1891. During Beardshear's 11-year tenure as President, the number of students increased from 336 to 1,220, and the professors increased from 25 to 78. He added new agriculture programs to the university, along with the buildings Morrill Hall in 1891, the Campanile in 1899, Old Botany in 1892, and Margaret Hall in 1895. Beardshear often preached at the chapel at night. In 1891, he began the foundation of officially sanctioning athletic college teams. A gymnasium and an athletic field were built at the university, and the university's football team became known as the Iowa State Cyclones in 1895. [Wikipedia]

I’d give up both testicles to look half as good as that gentlemen. Can only imagine how many chicks he had to turn away in his day.

There was a college in Toledo, Iowa? Do any of the facilities/structures still exist?

Interesting, I thought he was just the dude who's been eating all of my tuition payments the last 5 years.

They'd better cast Jeff Bridges for the biopic.

A man with the name of Beardshear should have a fantastic beard... and he did.

I was thinking his story would make a great film. Same for J.L. Wilkinson.

I would cast Christian Bale as Beardshear. Not sure who could play Wilkinson (but anybody but Nicholas Cage).
