Would be cheaper to fly into Dallas and then rent a car and drive down, once you are out of Dallas, its 3 lane interstate the entire way. Not much to see in Waco, think Ottumwa but bigger, lot of people like to check out the Chip and Joann stuff, which is OK.

After doing a quick search on expedia flights out of Des Moines to either Dallas or Austin, leaving on Friday and flying back on Sunday, I would drive it. Nothing cheap at either airport.
You might also try to find flights from Des Moines to Killeen (likely connecting thru DFW), which is an hour drive to Waco
