Baseball Oddities (Top Ten list)

Everytime I take my 5-year-old to a D-Backs game he wants to know if we're going to see Randy Johnson hit another bird.

I was at a game in the Metrodome where Gary Ward came running in from center on a shallow fly ball. He made a dive but didn't come up with it. Then, no one could find the ball. They eventually found it under Ward's hat. Don't recall where the batter wound up but I remember he ran for awhile.

The huge amount of traffic from this CF link has apparently wrecked the site. Either that or our network is still a great big steaming pile of crap and just can't find it. One of the two...

I got it off of cnnsi.com. So, I think that's where it's coming from. I was able to get into it after a couple tries.

I think that was a very childish thing the manager did after getting thrown out. It was entertaining, but what kind of message does that send to your players? It doesn't give you much credibility or respect as a leader.

I think the oddest thing I've seen in person was in high school. Wx4Cy, I'm not sure if you around for this or not. A kid from Adair-Casey got jammed while swinging. He fouled the ball off the bat and right into his face. I think it ended up breaking his orbital bone. It was crazy. I've never seen a ball come off like that before or since. I remember him being on the ground and the paramedics coming to the field.

I saw this exact thing happen when I was in high school. I was standing on 3rd when it happened. It was pretty crazy. The kid had the threads scraped into his face for about a week.

Not really crazy, but the crappiest thing that happened to us was in the sub-state final. We played at Dyersville Beckman, whose baseball field is on a football field. So, right field is about 220ft away, left is something like 350ft and center field is like 485ft. Our catcher crushed a ball to center and hit it about 430ft, but only got a triple.

Anybody else remember a few years back when Manny Ramirez cut off Johnny Damon's throw? It's the only time I've ever seen a left fielder cut off a center fielder's throw. Can't seem to find any video clips of it though....

But this video has to be one of my favorites. He really does need an Emmy for this performance!

Manny has got to be the least graceful outfielder in the majors. I love how if he makes an "amazing" play, the announcers make a huge deal about it. Well, if he wasn't so slow, he would've gotten a good jump and wouldn't have had to dive in the first place! I also hate how his dreds make his hat and helmet fall off on EVERY play he makes.

I love that one! That kid seems pretty mature... Anytime you swing the bat toward the umpire, you've got to expect to get tossed.

You won't find these on any videos but we had some crazy situations when I was playing.

1. At Baylor we were getting no-hit facing the second first rounder in two days (the guy the first day finished the no hitter). We had a guy on second and finally got a hit, bringing him in, seemingly pretty easily, and the umpire called him out. The player argued, the coach argued and everyone calmed down and went to the dugout except the traininer (Steve Condon). He was halfway out on the field still jawing at the ump a full minute later, still to this day I can't beleive he didn't get tossed. I saw him on the sidelines for the Philadelphia Eagles and he hadn't changed a bit, still in the refs ear all game...

2. We had just got done playing Oklahoma State and the umpire locker rooms are right next to the visitor locker rooms. After the game our third baseman was complaining about the umpires strike zone, pretty vehimately, but it was in the locker room, after the game so who cares. Next thing you know the umpire storms in our locker room and tosses him out for the next game! That's something I have NEVER heard of...

I got tossed between games at a double header for basicly the same thing when I was playing. The ump tossed 3 of us after the first game because he didn't want to hear it through the second one too.
