Probably really old news for some, but looks like Tech will start True Freshman Walk-On Baker Mayfield against SMU on Friday night. He beat out an Elite 11 QB (Davis Webb) in the past couple to secure the starting job after apparent starter Michael Brewer had a back injury sometime in the summer, and could be out til Oct.

Nobody really knows too much about this kid, except that he is also a Lake Travis QB (as is Garrett Gilbert, and Michael Brewer). He started the last two years, and was supposedly a 3* QB, but just really didnt have the offers so he chose to walk on at Tech.

He's about 6'2 220, and can run a little bit (supposedly...like I said, nobody really knows too much. He just kind of came out of nowhere). I guess after last season with Manziel, Kingsbury likes that in a QB.

Should be really interesting how he performs Friday.

Thanks for the info. I take it your starter will be back by the Iowa state game?

Rivals has him as a 3* with offers only from Rice, Florida Atlantic, and Washington State. Seems strange that would be the case.

I can see it...Texas kid sees a shot to play for Kliff 'Em All. I'll be pulling for this kid, I love to see walk-ons shine.
