Atlanta Braves Moving to Cobb County

Whoa... gotta say this one really blindsided me. A 17 year old stadium. But I guess if no work from the city is being done to help revitalize...

One of the best things about Turner field is that it's very easy to get there with public transportation. The new site could very well be a traffic nightmare with the added game day traffic to the already terrible rush hour traffic.

Maybe the Rays could move to Atlanta and play in Turner Field? Although Atlanta is having issues supporting the Braves so certainly the city would struggle being an AL/NL city.

The Rays have some of the best local TV ratings of any team in baseball. They are due for a 10 figure TV deal, they aren't going anywhere

Agree...but they play in the worst ballpark in baseball and people won't attend games there! So something will have to give...most likely the city or state is going to have to pony up some cash to keep them...otherwise some other town will! Vegas has been quiet on that front...but that would have its own problems!

citing better experience for fans as a reason....no, the team wants a theme park....

better fan experience is not putting the stadium at one of the worst traffic arteries in a metro that has terrible traffic problems, and will only have limited mass transit access. Mind you, the mass transit is designed for suburbanites, and flipping that equation does not work well.

I just don't understand these ball clubs that think the area around a stadium should be a destination. The game and tailgating is the destination.

People don't want to give up an entire day to go to a baseball game, especially regulars and season ticket holders.

If the Stadium needs upgrades, then fine. But this to me screams of making more money than what is best for the fans.

Oh, and Cobb County has to fund it, so we will see how that goes over with taxpayers. I think this is not a done deal by any means.

Wow.......I lived in Augusta for a few years, and went to Turner Field a few times each season. It's a pretty nice park, although the parking can be a pain. Still......build a new stadium after only 20 years? Plus, build it out in Cobb? This will not set well with the politics of Atlanta, I wouldn't think.

Isn't Atlanta considered a pretty crappy sports city in general though?

It seems crazy to me. But the Braves are acting like it is a done deal. Not sure how, but that is what all their comments make it sound like. I was at Turner field once, were in town on business, I took public transportation, it wasn't that bad. Just had to get on a bus off the train. It appears the new park will be in the suburbs where there is no significant mass transit.

I do get that the Braves don't like the dilapidated area around the stadium, and on that front I believe the city has failed to deliver what was promised, but to move out of a 20 year old ballpark seems really unwise.

Sounds like a bunch of ******** to me. Turner Field isn't exactly in a cosmopolitan area of Atlanta, but it works just fine. I drove there from Birmingham, AL spent the day doing tourist things around Atlanta and had no problem getting to the stadium and finding a parking spot for a night game and getting back home before midnight that night. I had never been to Atlanta before and these were the days when a "navigation system" included a ream of printed off Google Maps directions.

Stadium had a great atmosphere and I'd put it up pretty high in terms of the ballparks I've visited. Sounds like a pure cash grab by the owners and I hope the taxpayers of Georgia give them the finger.

The thing is, the new CBA has an almost IRON CLAD lock on TV rights. Vegas is in the Dodgers and Angels markets and they would have to OK a team to move there. If any team moves ANYWHERE it would have to be somewhere in Canada or Mexico. The most likely place for any team to move would be Montreal/.

Please make it so! I'm pumped just to watch two Spring Training games here next year. Now Montreal's Olympic Stadium, that is a legitimate dump in need of replacement/renovation.
