Athlon ranks ISU defensive line and linebackers as Big 12's best

Last line of Jared's piece: Safe to say, the secret is out on what’s being built in Ames.

Built in Ames

Interesting what isn't in Athlon.

No mention of Uwazarike on the first (3) teams lists.

And apparently CW's edit about La'Michael Pettway (WR from Arkansas) didn't make it into print.

Lose two really good corners, one that had been a starter from day 1 and graded out as one of the best in the nation and another that's in an NFL camp but still rated the 3 best group, that's impressive. I love the guys we have back but this unit is the most unknown on that side of the ball. Pay all these coaches whatever we need to keep them here.

If we still managed to rank third in the conference with our defensive backfield, I’m going to have to take a closer look at the competition when my mag arrives. Brock Purdy could have a huge year.

From Athlon’s Big 12 team-by-team roundup: Returning starters for each team. Impact of this hinges to some extent on quality of veterans, but notable nugget to compare overall numbers and balance between offense/defense experience.

(in descending order)

Kansas State: 15 (7 offense, 8 defense)
Iowa State: 14 (7 offense, 7 defense)
Baylor: 14 (8 offense, 6 defense)
Oklahoma: 13 (4 offense, 9 defense)
TCU: 12 (7 offense, 5 defense)
Texas Tech: 11 (6 offense, 5 defense)
Kansas: 10 (5 offense, 5 defense)
Oklahoma State: 10 (5 offense, 5 defense)
West Virginia: 9 (4 offense, 5 defense)
Texas: 7 (5 offense, 2 defense)

Any idea who they consider our 7? 5 OL, Purdy, Milton/Jones, TE1

ISU's Offensive 7, per Athlon:
WR Jones
LT Good-Jones
LG Olson
C Newell
RG Knipfel
RT Meeker
QB Purdy

Remainder of Athlon's depth cart for offense: Milton, Akers, Kolar, Nwangwu.

Only B12 team with all five interior OL starters returning. Runner-up total: 3 (three teams).

Thank you

I would have thought Tight End would count as a position starter. Most teams have this lineup:
5 OL
3 WR
1 TE
1 QB
1 RB

We definitely return 3 Tight Ends unless they considered Seonbuchner the starter.

Yeah they must have assumed Seonbuchner as starter. Maybe they do it by percentage of starts? (Kolar started 3 games per cyclones.com)
