Proof that not all understand D-Mac actually did have some good assistants on his squad.
But then again, I actually dislike the Ash hiring. I mean, who wants a coach that not only recruited, but helped mold some NFL-caliber players?

gotta love this hire. our secondary under him was always a bunch of ball hawks, tons of picks. and we know there is talent at corner for us.. safties need some work, but banks could move over and play saftey with james smith.... with Ash coaching it could be a good bunch with Bell, LJ, Benton and crew
:biglaugh: i still remember the night during football camp up there the summer before my sophomore year of high school, when he yelled at our whole floor for having a water fight, and about made us go run striders at like 1am. Arnaud (senior in HS) also happend to break my finger at that camp as well.
I really don't think people understand the magnitude of this hire. I will put money on it that he climbs the coaching ladder very quickly and is a head coach somewhere before it is all said and done.
I feel it is often underestimated how important the quality of the assistant coaches are. If you look at coaches tenures, it shows up. One of the things that hurt McCarney was some of his success, when he was still having it, led to losing some coaches. For example, losing the o-line coach meant we were never the same. If you look at Hayden Fry's time at Iowa (I know some of you just threw up in your mouths!) he had a lot of great assistants that went on to be head coaches, but when they did the quality of his staff, and the team slipped. I think Ferentz had the same deal with his o-line coach.
In basketball, the assistants have to be able to recruit. LE suffered turnover of assistants.
I absolutely love this hire!! I loved our secondary under him. Didn't we lead the big 12 in turnovers forced or something?
Statistically, SDSU (as in San Diego State) has arguably had the worst defense in the MWC for the past two seasons. They gave up an average of 37 ppg in both of the last two seasons, worst in conference. They gave up almost 500 ypg in 2007 and 460 ypg in 2008, again, worst in conference. The interception total dropped from 16 in 2007 to 9 in 2008.
How is this going to help ISU?

I like Ash as a person, great guy, charisma, but if you thought our DB's played off the ball last year do you even remember them under Mac/Skladany/Ash? They were WAY off the line...
I was wondering when someone was going to bring up the fact that Ash and the rest of the Chuck Long staff got fired at SDSU. I blame the bad defense on Bob Elliott - they couldn't stop the run. Ash's pass defense gave up something like 212 ypg. this year.
