Article concerning ISU recruiting NYC

Thanks.

Not sure how I feel about this:

The 6’7″ forward feels comfortable with Coach Hoiberg’s style of play. “They’re not a position team, everybody is just a basketball player. Big guys are allowed to roam freely if possible and they run and gun which fits my athleticism.â€￾

I certainly want to open things up more than McD did. But I also don't want us to got to the other end of the spectrum.

i'd consider that quote evidence FH doesn't want to be labeled "system" coach, which can be tough to overcome in the recruiting world....as we all learned.....

Thanks.

Seems to me to be the perfect recruiting strategy. I'm sure there will be some structure to what they do, but its a great idea to pitch a kid on being able to play their own game; espcially given the fact these kids probalby didn't grow up running the flex offense.

Picking up some NYC ballers would be huge.

This quote from Murphy stuck out to me
“They’re not a position team, everybody is just a basketball player. Big guys are allowed to roam freely if possible and they run and gun which fits my athleticism.â€￾

Now I'm really curious to see how this actually works out on the floor. Maybe Hoiberg will find the next Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble and we'll be the next Loyola Marymount.

As an aside, Pat Riley's "dream" concept for a team was five 6'9" (or there about) guys that could all play every position and were completely interchangeable on the court. Obviously, that is extremely difficult to establish at that level, but that was the concept.

That's so crazy it might just work.

The kid(s) say they like that. What's wrong with that??

Very excited about the possibility of bringing in New York kids to the program again. Some of our greatest success has happened with New Yorkers on the roster. Lets hope Coach Hoiberg can get the pipline going again.

Nothing as long as that is what gets put on the court. However, if we get kids here using that description of the offense and something else much more structured gets installed, I don't want kids transfering out.

the golden state warriors did that a couple years back ... got them like a 6 seed in the west - I guess it kinda worked

the jordan/pippen/harper/rodman bulls were pretty close 4 outta 5:cool:

Thanks.

Are you kidding me? Have you ever watched the Memphis Tigers run and gun. It's the most exciting way to play the game and it's tough to beat.

It's a great way to play but you have to have serious players. Memphis has had tons of talent. I think Hoiberg wants to run that style eventually but will probably be a little more selective with the shooting the first couple of years.

Good article, it is great to hear that coach Hoiberg is after top flight talent from NY. The guards he could attract from that area has me extremely curious as to what can possibly happen again( Tinsley, Stinson).

Thanks.

I wonder how many of you will be deriding "the Mayor" for playing "streetball" and having an "undisciplined" team if this comes to fruition...like you did for WM? That will be interesting to see.

Personally, I like that we are expanding our recruiting and that we are looking for athleticism. We, fortunately, still play in the Big 12...we need an athletic team.

If you look at the recent past in MBB across the country you will see that some of the best teams are those that have a lot of long athletic guys in this 6-6 to 6-9 range that can really run the court. Great PGs and Cs tend to be one and done and these long 6-6 to 6-9 guys tend to dominate in the college game right now.

I also think that up-tempo is definately the way to go...kids want to play it and fans want to watch it. And contrary to popular thought on this board...up-tempo ball is not the same as undisciplined ball...you have to have discipline even while playing an up-tempo game.
