Normally I wouldn't take to doing something like this but just thought I'd pass the message along. This is the biggest home game we've hosted in years. The game itself is big enough, but consider everything else.
-This is a national (or at least regional) spotlight game on ABC
-This is the last time we will ever host Nebraska (presumably)
-The winner of this game takes the driver's seat for the Big 12 North (the last time this division will ever exist by the way)
-Last year's game set the stage for an incredible season, capped by a bowl victory, in a landmark game for the program and Cyclones everywhere.
The list goes on. As fans, I think it's just as crucial as with the team that we be cognizant of our obligations for this game. Get there early. Cheer loud. Represent the fan base well.
Our jobs are easy. Get in the stadium early. We all know how bad it bottlenecks around the gates. Avoid the rush ten minutes to kickoff and give yourself enough time to be in your seat when Jeff Johnson hits the field.
Actively cheer during the game. Make some noise when we're on defense. Celebrate each first down. Give the team your full backing.
Be back in your seat when the third quarter starts. I understand some like to head out and grab a beer at halftime. I've done it too. But make sure you don't miss the first five minutes of the first quarter because one beer turned into two (I've also been guilty of that).
Stick with this game right up until the end. How many times are we ever going to host Nebraska? How much do we long for football season between the months of January to August? Is it too much to ask not to leave with four minutes left in the game?
Please don't take this the wrong way. I'm not calling out the fan base or trying to complain about little nuances here and there. I just think it's critically important that as fans we all show up and do our part on Saturday, and in the grand scheme of things, that's not asking much from any of us. I'm just as guilty as anyone of not being in my seat when the game starts or ducking out a minute or two early, but I'm going to put my money where my mouth is on Saturday and I hope everyone else does as well.
Let's rock Jack Trice on Saturday and make each and every one of those Nebraska fans and players glad that they'll never have to come to Ames again (well, until after basketball season that is).
Go Cyclones!
