Ames High #1 in Iowa

I'm biased being an Ames kid. Graduated a long time ago. Loved the school and the high level of academic and athletic competition. Felt it prepared me very well for down the road. I've never figured out the desire for so many of Iowa State's coaches and Admin that send their kids to Gilbert.

I don't know if the pull is to Gilbert vs the push away from Ames due to publicity and where the houses in their budget range are located.

Most of them live in North Ames in the Gilbert school district.

Most of the growth in Ames is in the Gilbert district. Ames is getting boxed in.

Some could open enroll, but there are still a few people that think big schools are a bad thing. But you could still do a lot worse than sending your kid to Gilbert.

They send their kids to Gilbert because that's the district where the desirable houses are for people making millions of dollars.

A lot of it comes down to simple growth and development being in the Gilbert School district. But I'd say in general Gilbert is still viewed as a more desirable school district by most people. I have had good experiences in the Ames elementary school with my kids, though some are better than others. I have not been impressed with the middle school, but the new Principal they brought back seems to be working hard to improve things. Based on everyone I know in both districts, some that have attended both through moving or open-enrolling, I'd say Gilbert has done a better job in the elementary and middle school levels while Ames has the advantage in HS. Still, probably splitting hairs. If your kid wants to do well, it's going to happen in either school.

Most of the parents I know that were adamant about sending their kids to Gilbert went to small schools. Granted, it's not that small a school by Iowa standards. I also think it's a little deceiving to look at test performance at a school like that, when it's almost exclusively mid- to high-income, has a tiny English as a second language student population.

Gilbert was "only" ranked #4 in the state behind Ames, Iowa City West and Decorah. Based on the review, it was a toss-up on who was #1. AHS is good, but there are many strong public schools in the state.

FYI- Last I knew some Gilbert district kids were coming to Ames for swimming. Ames excels in swimming last time I checked.

The best chance a kid gets in playing and excelling in varsity sports is if they are talented at the sport, put the work in, parents pay the $$ to go to all the camps and travel around the US going to the different tournaments.

Gilbert is #4 only because of the Ames households, and therefore Ames support, in their school district...
