This morning Jon Miller stated that with a win over Penn State, Iowa would be in the hunt for the National Title. I am not 100% sure he was being serious; however you couldn’t say he was being sarcastic. I just don’t understand this logic that the Hawks are Title contenders. Currently they are unranked and have a huge game against a Top 10 Team this weekend. They also still have Michigan, play at Ohio State and at Michigan State. I do think the Hawks are a decent football team. Heck I can even see the Hawks going 8-4 or 9-3, but to say they are in the hunt for the National title at this point is just insane.

Using this logic Iowa State is in the hunt as well. There will be a number of teams in the hunt at the end of the year that will have one loss. Therefore as long as we win out, ISU should be thinking of Pasadena. :jimlad:

Technically he's right. Any 4-0 team from a BCS conference has the opportunity to win out and position itself at the top of the BCS rankings. Don't know that there's much of an argument there.

Factor in common sense, and it's pretty ridiculous to say that at this point in the season given that the same can be said of Indiana, South Florida, and more than 20 other BCS teams.

Currently booking hotel and plane tickets! :jimlad:

4-0 after a win at Penn State? Yes, TECHNICALLY, they'd be in the hunt. And if they go undefeated, would have a good shot of getting into the title game. Will that happen? Chances are extremely extremely slim.

But it's possible.

Iowa is technically in the title hunt and ISU is technically in the hunt for a BCS game.

knowing Iowa's luck with bowl game competition, they'll play BYU for the title game. So, technically, I might become mormon by the new year.

That is a great point that I do not think that most people think of. Technically most teams are in the hunt, but it is not realistic for most team to be thinking and predicting a National Title. The Hawks are a good team, it is just not realistic to say they are title contenders.

Jon did make a good point the other day however. He says he doesn't have a problem with fans dreaming big, as long as they aren't jerks if those dreams don't materialize. I think this logic applies to all teams, not just the Hawks. Unfortunately, most fans go off the chain when their team doesn't live up to unrealistic expectations.

He was being sarcastic. He says this to basically make fun of the people on his board that have these types of expectations every year.

But on the other hand if Iowa does manage to win Saturday it wouldn't be crazy to think they could be going to Columbus, Ohio in November at 10-0. Unlikely but possible. Here is how the schedule sets up with the next 6 games after Saturday if they do start 4-0:
Arkansas St
Michigan
@Wisconsin
@Michigan St
Indiana
Northwestern
@Ohio State

Yeah they have had some good luck with bowl game competition:

Florida twice in Outback played in Florida
LSU
Texas in Alamo played in Texas
USC
Texas Tech in Alamo played in Texas

I would hate to see the match-ups if they were unlucky.

10-0 going into Columbus? I think you are overlooking one pretty important thing there. I'm going to go ahead and pencil in an L for that home date with Northwestern.

Northwestern lost to Syracuse. Northwestern is not a good football team this year (they were last year) and Iowa will not lose to them.

Also, MSU sucks. Wisconsin sucks. Both of those games were touted as HUGE OMG TOUGH games - when in reality, they're not. They're against mediocre teams in tough atmospheres.

If Iowa were to win Saturday, it's completely plausible that they're 10-0 going into Columbus. And then Ricky Stanzi will naked bootleg for the win. Suck it.

With the continued improvement of Iowa's D and OL ... that could end up being enough to make Iowa favored through the rest of the season with the exception of the Ohio State game. Iowa could be in the hunt for a NC ... but it's obviously still a long shot.

That didnt happen I got my *** chewed on here yesterday for saying Iowa fans say that. They dont say things like that.

If Iowa loses to any team at home, it isn't going to be Northwestern. The only team that really has a shot to beat them at home for the rest of the year is Michigan.

As was pointed out all ready, jNU lost to Syracuse, and don't let the box score fool you into thinking that was a close game.

All things being equal, I'll go ahead and write in - with a pen - a homecoming loss to Baylor for Iowa State.

What the hell do you want? It's better than playing Boisie State in Idaho for a bowl game.

Jon made another comment on their show this morning. He said Stanzi's 2010 Heisman candidacy starts with Saturday's game. Only this time he laughed afterwards and it was easy to tell he was being sarcastic. I am now pretty sure he was being sarcastic when making the first statement I referred to.

I assume he does this to see how Deace reacts.
