Anyone have any experience with after-market overhead DVD systems? We had a Honda Odyssey with an OEM DVD system but it got hit and totaled. We are looking for a replacement Odyssey and see some without the DVD system. Was wondering if anyone had one and how it worked?

Thanks

Not directly answering your question, but we just purchased a minivan and opted for no DVD system. Buying multiple Ipads is less expensive, you can take them away / out of site, play more than just dvds. Just my quick 2cents.

We have a friend whose husband is an electrician and they put one in. Everything was hooked up right but it was still pulling power from the battery even when off so they took it out.

We had one in our last vehicle, it was a pretty pricey roof mount model because I didn't want junk. Professionally installed. But it quit working after a year or two. I agree a laptop or a tablet does the same job with more convenience.

Kinda surprising an electrician couldn't figure that out.

We have never had an on board system, we just use portables. I agree with going with tablet type options depending on the age of kids (we don't let the 2yr old play the iPad) Almost every movie we buy has a digital download, put them on cloud and watch anywhere. Plenty of apps that don't need to be online to play. Our older kids (almost 12 and 9) have aged out of DVD's for long trips. Still have two under the age of 4, movies come I handy for the longer trips we take.

I just have the portable DVD player that mounts between either two front seats or two back seats. Hook it up to the auxiliary sound and a charger and good to go (or use a headphone divide jack if you want to listen to something else). All of those things is less than 100 bucks. Or as mentioned you can buy google tablets for $49 now that will provide the same function and avoid the fights over what gets watched. All way cheaper than the built in systems.
