Looks like the property was gifted to Iowa, so even after operating losses they'll still come out a few million ahead. But still, **** the Hawks.
weren't students of AIB hurt in this? I don't remember, and if so, it would be best to reimburse them. Right?

It's because the original plan was for them to use that campus as "University of Iowa - Des Moines", but there was enough uproar from Iowa State and UNI that they were prevented from following through with that, so it ended up being less than planned. It isn't that they were being stupid, it is that they got caught trying to underhandedly establish a satellite campus.

Additionally, I think this was the time where ISU surpassed Iowa in enrollment. At the time of this deal, I think the thought was that Iowa was trying to buy students in order to keep their superiority in enrollment figures.

This was a total disaster from the moment it was conceptualized, and completely emblematic of the arrogant leadership at the University of Iowa for thinking this would work. One of the few good things Steve Leath did for ISU was not to try to glom on to this mess and instead just sit back and let it collapse under its own stupidity.

Wasn't this kind of a back-room deal that tried to bypass the Regents? IIRC, the AIB President essentially just gave away the institution (campus, programs, faculty, students).

Very much so. It was also during that time when the state was considering shifting funding based on in-state undergrads which would have decimated Iowa's current bloated funding.
