4h quarter field goal attempt

Is there a specific rule that addresses the ball going over the uprights? This seems like an interpretation, not a specific rule on the topic at hand.

I don’t care either way, I’ve just seen people claim both things…. That a ball going over the upright is automatically good, and some claiming a ball going over the upright is automatically a miss.

I suspect there is no specific rule, and that it is judgement of the official (who is in the best place to judge). Also why I think this is not subject to a booth review… it’s a moment in time judgement call by the person with the best view, with no camera’s able to definitely prove anything.

I do not recall the 2011 OSU kick, but recall the 2001 Independence Bowl kick very well as I was at the game. Tony Yelk’s kick with 47 seconds left sailed directly over the upright and was ruled no good. ISU subsequently lost to Alabama 13-14.

The television announcers got a “rules expect” on to clarify the situation. He said that when the football travels above the goal post, 100 percent of ball must be inside the goal post to be good.

As previously stated, if the official thinks that any part of the ball would have touched the goal post had it extended vertically to where the ball crossed, then the kick is no good. Consequently, even if the officials thinks that 90 percent of the ball would have been inside the post, the kick is no good. Without being directly under the goal post, it’s very difficult to say if the ball would have touched the post had it extended vertically. Even the, it’s somewhat of a guess when the vast majority of the ball is inside the goal post, as it was in this situation.

On a side note, I would have gone for it instead of trying the FG. The reason being is I thought the chances of making the FG was 50/50. If I was 80 percent certain that we would make the FG, I would have kicked it. When you don’t have faith in your kicking game, and I don’t know anyone could, you need to go for it when it’s fourth and short, IMO

No it wasn't. 4 & 1 from around the 20. They haven't stopped the sneak. Kicking the FG is settling for an attempt to go to overtime.

You can't play this game not to lose.
I agree with your sentiments. I would add that we are playing with some bastardized philosophy of trying to keep it close enough to win or avoid embarrassment. The last 2 4th quarters definitely felt like we are content with getting back within one score.

Exactly. We don't open up the offense until we absolutely have to.

The issue is poor line play.. Good/ bad news is we have 4 Sr linemen. Problem to me is Neal currently starting for Remsburg is the next man in and he's awful. Gotta find some beasts in the portal.

Lol, except they did fail on 4th and 1, but still had a chance to win. Your entire theory is bunk.
It's not a theory. It's coaching 101. You would trade a 37 yard field goal for first down 2 minutes left at your own 12 yard line.

You've been watching too much high school football.
