30 for 30: American Gladiators

What a scene that had to be. How great would it have been if McGuyver and Nitro got into a fist fight.
It wouldn't have been much of a fight. Richard Dean Anderson was reasonably tall, at least 6', but was not a big dude at all. It's not a joke that the camera adds 10 pounds. He was pretty Skinny. Nitro actually looked bigger in person, and I'm not and never have been a small guy.

Loved that show...and how the set changed (very 80s/90s modern looks, etc). I remember being stressed for the contestants with the "hand bike" portion of the eliminator...seems folks either had ZERO issue or just couldn't move it. Also remember at the end when they broke through the paper and either were a clear path to the finish line or hit a gladiator (if i was on the show...would have a secret hand signal with my support person in the crowd, lol).

I've seen a few of the old shows recently and I'm amazed at men contestants...seem they are all "29 year old software designers" but all look like 45 with flowing mullets and mustaches.

I met Nitro at the Des Moines Grand Prix in the early 90s. He was there as one of the celebrities and my uncle had won a seat in the celebrity race, so I had a VIP pass to hang out. My brother and I were just hanging out in the hospitality tent after the last practice session of the day and Nitro (Dan Clark) came in, at that time, my brother and I were the only ones there, so he grabbed a beer and sat down at our table and we started shooting the ****. Then Gunnar Nelson came in and sat down with us too.

Richard Dean Anderson (Macgyver), was the big Celebrity name there, he then came in and started to raise a stink and yelled at security to clear the room. What a dickhead that guy was. By that time, there were maybe 10 people in the tent, it was big and we all belonged there. Anyway, Dan proceeded to tell security that none of us were leaving, then he started making fun of Macgyver and what a ****** show it was. Which I'm sure pissed Richard Dean off even more since he couldn't hear us talking, but we went from a nice quiet conversation to pretty loud bouts of laughter. He told us a few stories of what a **** Macgyver had been so far, not doing the stuff requested they do as a group, complaining about everything. So yeah, Dan was pretty cool.
Not surprised to hear Macgyver was a *****. Just oozes big ***** energy.

On now. A doctor said an atlasphere contestant ran into a gladiator so hard part of the steel ball broke and went into their back to the bone. 75 internal stitches and 75 external stitches.

Take the fam to Gladiator Arena for a fun day together and see a ******* crime scene after atlasphere.

Jeesh.

This documentary is weird. I like hearing from the gladiators but I don’t really like the direction the film maker is going with it. Just strange

I got a chuckle out of them talking to one of the school employees at Erie Tech. Pretty sure the guy thought they were talking about Nate Carr instead of this Dann Carr person.

What a weird ending. He like bought the guy's "rights?"

Reminded me of Millhouse selling his soul on the Simpsons.

Netflix just released its own American Gladiators 5-episode doc.

Looks like they got some of the people who didn't participate in the "30 for 30" version -- Nitro, Ice, Zap, Laser, Blaze.

I saw that. I know what I'm doing this weekend now.

Watched it last night -- the whole thing is only around 3.5 hours total. Some good stuff, though.

In addition to the characters mentioned above, Sky, Diamond, and Tower were also interviewed.

Good because finally watching espn part 1 and at the part where you realize the star gladiators aren't apart of this really takes away from this espn one.

Didn't realize his dad was one of the instructors, "Sarge". Interesting to see on episode 2 of the Netflix series.

I'm right at this part currently. I have to say it's nice to see a network of brand do a documentary on this that doesn't kiss Johnny Ferraro's ***.

Based on this he maybe came up with the name but the concepts that made it the success it was had nothing to do with him.
