I have been preaching this and last nights game reflects the facts. This team is sooo close to be wicked good they don't even realize it - i think….
When this team is determined to go to the rack, they put themselves in a position to win. When they become lazy, complacent and shot somewhat or contested 3's over and over, we lose. Ball movement, spacing, unselfish - its infectious and once that train started rolling, you could see it, it was if the team inflated a balloon and it just kept swelling...
Last nights game was a direct reflection of this theory. Too often in crunch time we get in love with the three. When we won on the road at Okie St and Texas, we focused on penetration and when the help happened we shot wide open 3's. What i saw in our losses to Baylor and KSU, they want to hit the dagger every shot - shooters mentality. Notice its not called the winners mentality. When crucial times happen in a game, there comes a time what a basket is more important then the ESPN highlights.
Last night in the final 14:58 of the game, we shot a whopping 6 - three point shots (made 4). However, the complexion of that game changed when we penetrated and finished at or near the rim. We did exactly what Texas and Baylor did - penetrate, be prepared to finish but if its not there, kick. Not too mention, it puts the whistle back in the refs mouth to call fouls and not put yourself in the situation we were in against KSU with 18 seconds left and were not in the bonus yet - really????
This game truly emphasized the importance of one basket at a time. Don't over think it, don't over complicate the issues at hand. When you need a basket do not take a contested shot - with the talent on this team theres no need for a contested shot. When our offense is clicking, you see the movement, you see the spacing and you see everyone trying to one up the others pass for an easy basket. That style of basketball was soooo fun to watch, i even said the same thing about Oklahoma in the first half when they penetrated, kicked to top of key and the ball hit every players hands before Heidl hit a corner jumper for 3. It was beautiful to see, it reminded me of our teams unselfishness earlier this year. I hope this game allows them to get back to what they do well, and what makes them look dangerous in the tourney….2nd half was super fun to watch, it was beautiful basketball!
Great Job guys….keep it up agains those horned frogs as they're not an easy out at home!
