Niang: No brainer

Morris: I think he's over the bar, but not quite a no brainer.

Ejim: A tad under the bar IMO, but quite reasonable if he gets up there.

I don't like putting too much weight on awards by voting; there's just too many examples all over of these kind of things being wrong. Plus I don't like farming out ISU decisions to random outside people. And I still think Kane should have been Big 12 POY.

It won't take Niang 15 years to get honored. He'll be up there the minute he is eligible. If he's not then our athletic department is failing him, the program, and fans.

Are there actual rules about when somebody becomes eligible? Also, what if he is still playing somewhere? You don't want to do it without him and it isn't like he is going to just leave the team he is on to come back for a weekend to do it.

Just retire all 3. They all have been part of most successful Iowa state basketball era. All will graduate. All are good kids.

To me retiring numbers is about players that perform and represent the school st elite levels.

To be blunt. Play in the NBA or win an Olympic medal. He's very worthy of being honored but just doesn't clear the bar in my eyes at least not yet. He's got time to earn it in other ways.
Just for the record, ISU is neither in the NBA nor part of the Olympics. Are you advocating for Shirley and Vroman? I think NBA or Olympics can add to (and justify) the lore of a collegiate player, but it's the collegiate accomplishments that must predominantly drive a university to hang a jersey.

Good discussion everyone needs understand, that if it took 20 years to retire Barry Stevens jersey so Melvin, George and Monte will be given the honor around 2030 or later. Fred and Jeff were quicker only because they had 10+ year runs in the NBA, but still it took around 15 years after graduation for both of these to get the honor.

I think all three deserve it because of AA status and will eventually get the honor.

Nope, Hornacek's jersey was retired by ISU in 1991 (he graduated in 1986). Fred has his jersey retired in 1997 (he graduated in 1995).

I'm pretty sure I've read that they have to be in the ISU HoF first which requires them to have graduated.

Melvin Ejim ......
From Wikipedia..

"As a senior in 2013–14, Ejim had one of the best seasons in school history, earning Big 12 Player of the Year honors (coaches & AP) and All-America honors from five organizations. He was a finalist for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, became the fifth Academic All-American in school history, earned Capital One first team Academic All-America honors and was named the Big 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year for the second time. He became just the fourth player in league history to record 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career, finishing his career with the most wins of any Cyclone men's basketball player at 88 wins. He also finished 12th in scoring (1,643), second in rebounding (1,051), tied for 10th in steals (146) and 15th in blocks (59); he also broke the school record for games played (135) and games started (126"

three NCAA tournaments, a Big 12 Tourney Title and Sweet 16. Played on two national teams as well.

What else does he need to do?

Ejim has more accolades than Morris yet Morris is a lock?

With the understanding that retiring numbers leads to less options in the future, that puts a limitation on who is worthy of their number being retired. Now, if Iowa State were to do a "ring of honor" type thing, there is no doubt in my mind all 3 would be up there.

We don't retire numbers, just jerseys.

Fred's was done in 1997, and he graduated in 1995. That's, like, not 10 years.
No reason not to get these guys rolling now. Get started with Melvin, get Niang up there, then Monte the next year.

Yes, it has been pointed out to me. Not sure how I forgot.
I'm frequently guilty of starting to read a four page thread and responding to a post on the first page before discovering that twelve people have already responded.

And I've had it happen to me. I feel your pain! ;)

As I said earlier (and I am not comparing our programs success to UNC),

Personally I think if you are in the ISU HOF you should have your name in the Rafters. I think a person deserves at least that recognition.

So if Grayer had blown his knee out in his last game at ISU and his basketball playing days were over in your mind he shouldn't have been recognized?

He might have been a hell of a player in the NBA. He was never the same after the rookie knee injuries he did have.
