.

So if Grayer had blown his knee out in his last game at ISU and his basketball playing days were over in your mind he shouldn't have been recognized?

He might have been a hell of a player in the NBA. He was never the same after the rookie knee injuries he did have.

Harsh but yes. Grayer also medaled in the Olympics which people tend to forget. This is a high bar.

I agree his career would have been great in the NBA if not for the injury.

As I said earlier (and I am not comparing our programs success to UNC),

Personally I think if you are in the ISU HOF you should have your name in the Rafters. I think a person deserves at least that recognition.

There are at least three or four no-brainers that need to go up in my opinion, maybe five. I will list some of their stats and accomplishments even though the more recent guys will be obvious numbers you might already know. Seeing them listed usually helps me decide.

I am a big fan of Jake's but he has zero business ever getting his jersey hung. If you can't be 1st or 2nd team All Conference, you just cannot hang in the rafters. History will judge that better than I will but the answer is no way.

100 % agree on the locks to hang in the rafters one day. Soon, we will add Wiggenton the the rafters also ;)

I know he did. But if he blew out his knee in his last college game then he wouldn't have gotten that chance. It is your opinion, but I don't understand how what someone accomplishes after college has any bearing on a college award.

I think it would be an "intangible"...a long NBA career might keep a player on the front burner in peoples' minds while someone who graduates and moves on to a non-basketball-centric life might fade more from memory.

In my opinion being on the front burner of people's minds is immaterial. There is a reason these aren't decided by popular vote. There is a similar reason that they generally wait quite a few years before awarding the honor. I think that is wise to keep from getting caught up in the moment.

Probably should have clarified...I don't think it's a VALID reason. I was just offering up why it might have an impact. There IS a certain amount of "being an ambassador for ISU" involved though.

Agreed. I did think about a player who is hugely disgraced after college and not getting recognized because they besmirched the University by their actions.

I stated earlier in the thread. I think it's more than a college award for that banner. Hall of fame and other recognition covers athletic and academic accomplishments. Those with the banner are outstanding in their presence outside of Iowa State (with some exception). Grayer accomplished that so he earned that banner. When someone outside of Iowa State fandom sees the banner, era depending, they should recognize the name.

Who from the above list graduated? And yes that is relevant.
Sorry, but Fizer is not a lock. It's been 15 yrs already. How long did it take for Hoiberg's to hang? Or, anyone else's for that matter?

Fred was two years off the top my head but it kinda varies. I think its mostly how much demend there is by the fan base. I could even see Niang being next year if people keep asking.

Barry Stevens wasn't until 2008 and he played back in the 80s, but he sadly died young in 2007 so they of helped pushed him in. I'm surprised he wasn't retired early actually because I think he was the first big player that helped Orr get Iowa State rolling.

Im not sure who has graduated outside of Niang, Ejim and Sullivan. I know Fizer had not yet graduated as of a couple of years ago. I assume everyone else on that list did graduate though.

Tinsley? I thought he left with 1 year left

This isn't a deep insight, but a Chicago station held a call in vote on all time great CW songs. A lot of them were on the current top ten.

How lucky I was to be living in such a golden age.

Fizer's a lock. I can't believe it hasn't happened yet. Best player on the best team we've ever had? I still believe he got screwed out of NPY about the same way the team got screwed in it's NCAA seeding his last season. I kinda think I'd have to put Homan up there before a couple players mentioned also..Loren Meyer also?

Homan and Meyer are examples of "underrated" list, to me. (Many others are in the mix there ... we could fill in the blanks all day on that). Unsung role players for sure. Michalik is in same era as Meyer, and probably is even more under-radar.

To use Johnny-Five's longshot assessment as a guide, a player like Big-Victa is a level above all those players.
