Duckworth must be injured. Mild surprise to me is Gonzalez being the #1 OH option in her absence as true frosh.

The Daily previews the season.

When the Tennis team made the NCAA Elite 8 they got a tennis complex:

And recruited ranked players:

Volleyball needs to bring the fire, temper the metal, and reap the rewards. Not putting down the Volleyball team as they have had some success, but a higher level is needed to get that committed volleyball facility.

VB is getting a committed practice facility as the Tennis facility near Sukup will be repurposed for VB.

But I do agree the VB program does need a new, smaller, intimate competition venue to compete with the other top Upper MW programs that now all have them. The opportunity was there to do so with CyTown and that opportunity may have unfortunately passed. Maybe a subsequent phase of CyTown will include that venue not only for VB but Wrestling/Gymnastics as well. Or maybe the Tennis facility can be completely redone to include seating for a viable dual competition/practice venue. It doesn't have to be that big. ACC champ and Final Four participant Louisville is signing the two top 2024 HS prospects from the State of Iowa and they play in a venue with a capacity of 1.2K.

Watched the first set. Duckworth was in sweats evidently due to injury, TV crew didn't provide a reason. Englebrecht and Perry were both dressed but didn't play. They were the starting MB tandem at the end of last season but were replaced tonight by Hopp and McCune who both played well.

Team played a 5-1 rotation instead of the 6-2 that got them in the NCAAs last season.

Gonzalez and McCune were in the starting lineup as true frosh and they both appear to be immediate hits from the 2023 recruiting class.

South Dakota won the Summit last season and are the favorites to repeat. They lost to Houston 3-2 in last season's NCAAs. So getting the sweep against this program without Duckworth is a real good start to the season.

Hatch played really well and seems to give them veteran leadership. Really impressed with our last 2 recruiting classes. Brant and Duckworth are arguably our best players and Gonzalez and McCune looked to be strong freshmen.

Another sweep, this time over DePaul (8-15-23), to open the season 2-0.

Freshman Gonzalez another double-digit kill performance (and 9 digs). Hopp and freshman McCune 6 blocks each. Stonestreet and Krzeslak both with double-digit digs. Frosh Wachholz with 11 kills (.500), 3 digs, and 3 blocks.

Team hitting: .330 to .027.

Next up: Trip to the Grand Canyon (GCU) tournament. Facing Arizona Friday night, Long Island Saturday afternoon, and host GCU Saturday night.

Was a fun match to watch. Do we know the deal with Maya?
From yesterday’s Daily story
Iowa State expects to be without preseason All-Big 12 sophomore Maya Duckworth for the second-straight game, as she is dealing with some nagging injuries and is currently “week-to-week,” according to Iowa State coach Christy Johnson-Lynch.

Bet there are some good viewing angles from some of the seats for this.

Appears it will be on Big Ten Network tomorrow night at 7 pm.
