1996 Bulls vs 2017 Warriors

This was on Yahoo this morning. I would trend towards the Bulls. I think they would be equipped defensively to slow down the Warriors much more so than any current NBA team. Plus with the freedom of movement rules, I think Jordan could drop about 40 per night.

If the bulls were allowed to play defense the way teams in the 90's were allowed to play defense give me the bulls. If not, the Warriors would be at the stripe all night long.
 
Durant makes his team better than the Bulls. James will need to get Russel Westbrook on the Cavs team.

Idk if the defense would be enough. I think GS would just keep up the pace the whole game. The bulls never had to play as fast as teams play basketball these days. I also think the bulls were built to stop inside scoring. The warriors would just shoot over them. The game has changed too much imo.

Probably, but he would also have to deal with multiple help defenders that he didn't with the old illegal defense rules. The Bulls starting lineup would be unplayable in today's NBA, there would be no spacing at all on offense with Longley, Harper and Rodman out there.

The warriors are a very good defensive team right now. If they could play more physical defense without getting called for fouls they would be even better. The warriors are better if you keep your nostalgia for Jordan out of the debate.

2017 Warriors would beat the '96 Bulls in 5 games or less. MJ/Pippen/Rodman line up somewhat equal to Steph/Klay/Draymond but who's going to guard Durant, Ron Harper?!


*Side note: I hate different generation comparisons, too many variables have changed.

The Warriors are good at defense, that Chicago defense was probably the greatest of all time. You had lockdown defenders at at least 4 of 5 spots (not sure about center)

If we're going by 90's rules, Steph wouldn't survive the first half of game 1, let alone the entire series. So therefore, to make it somewhat of a challenge, we'd have to play by today's rules.

It'd be an interesting series for sure. Chicago has elite defenders to guard every single player on GS, the problem for GS is they have nobody who could guard Jordan. Since we're playing by today's rules, they could bring help from Rodman's man since he couldn't shoot but then you're leaving one of the greatest rebounders of all time to just float around unguarded.

The Durant/Pippen battle would be an interesting one, a bit like the Durant/Kawhi battle today.

I think in today game, Warriors would win rather easily. Play this game in the 90's, and the Bulls may have a slight advantage.

ummm, how about one of the top 3 greatest defensive forwards of all time aka Scottie Pippen?

Harper and Jordan would take turns on Curry/Klay and both would be great defenders for him. Harper wasn't a scrub, he was an elite defender who was a physical guard but just an OK offensive player.

Pippen would mainly guard Durant...and again I don't know that you could ask for a better defender, to some extent nobody can guard a shooter with moves who is that tall, Nowistki was the same way but not quite as quick.

Harper/Jordan/Pippen is the best perimeter defense I've ever seen and it's not close. Like I said before best offense lineup ever vs best defensive lineup.

The big "era" difference is that in today's NBA game the Bulls wouldn't have their 18 fouls of slow 7 footer at center, they'd have Rodman and a second more mobile power forward. Back then you needed those enforcer fouls in the paint, now you don't, so they wouldn't do that.

*edit: Rodman draws at least 2 technical fouls on Draymond Green over the series, would be shocked if he didn't trick Green into an ejection at some point.

Some of that "nostalgia" is factual history that while the Warriors have more offensive weapons, Jordan would still be the best offensive clutch player and least likely to have a scoring slump on the floor.

Which of MJ's six finals did he play as poorly as Curry did last year (22ppg on 40% shooting)? Answer: He drastically outplayed that line all 6 times despite being guarded much more physically while also being an elite physical defender himself. That's why the Bulls would always have a chance. There was no such thing as an MJ slump NBA Finals series. Curry and LeBron are insane talents, what separates Jordan is you can't say "remember that bad finals he had" or "remember that average finals he had" because it never happened.

The overconfidence of some in the Bulls is just as misplaced as anyone who guarantees Michael Jordan loses a Finals in his prime. It's a very close decision, and most likely a 1-1 draw if you consider one has to play in the other's era.

This is a really good call. Rodman was a master of getting in people's head and Draymond is easily provoked. Just look at last year's finals.

I think it is really hard to compare great teams from across eras bc the game changes and so the Warriors would have gotten different role players in the 90s to fit around their stars and same with the Bulls if they were playing today with Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman. Although, Kukoc may have been even better in today's NBA then back then as he was so versatile and could stretch the floor and pass etc. The Bulls were also usually the top offensive team or close to it when they played and I think that is forgotten about. A big reason for that was their defense forcing a lot of turnovers and no one was stopping Jordan and Pippen on fast breaks. I think that is one aspect Kerr has really brought to the Warriors; creating turnovers. The Bulls were great at getting steals and deflections. The Warriors are great at that as well.

I think the fun matchups would be if the Warrios went with their 'small' lineup with Green, Durant, Igoudala, Thompson and Curry vs. Rodman, Kukoc, Pippen, Jordan, and Harper.

I hope Durant stays healthy bc he is one of my favorite players ever to watch. Before the injuries there was a lot of talk about him taking over as best player in the league. In these first two games, he is starting to look like he could take that mantel away from Lebron. Granted, Lebron is older and has been on top for awhile now. But Durant is showing everything in his game right now on both ends of the floor and it might be his time to take over for the next several years.

Or another guy in the HoF for his defense/hustler/rebounding in Dennis Rodman

Harper was a legitimate star before he hurt his knee(?), Look at his numbers in LA and Cleveland.

Curry didn't really play great in the first finals either. But the first two Warriors teams were just that, teams. It was more about the collective than anything. Now they have the collective plus the all time great individual talent in Durant.

Part of why it's such a tough choice. Team with the most weapons I've ever seen vs team with the player least likely to slump in a big moment I've ever seen.

I will admit Durant minimizes that problem. I'd say any team, even one with Jordan on it, would be hard pressed to outscore a team with Durant and Curry where neither is slumping...but again it's possible either or both could because I've seen it.

Without Durant we know the Bulls could beat the Warriors because look at last year with LeBron just taking over and being that much better than any one piece of the Warriors talented puzzle.
