1988 team

I was watching my 100 years of cyclone basketball DVD the other day and generally loved it, but, I was disappointed at how the 1988 team was characterized.

DVD basically said great game against Iowa, Lafester was amazing, and team did go on to qualify for the tournament

My perspective, I graduated in 1988 and saw every game. Arguably the biggest win, at No. 3 Purdue,(with Joe Barry Carroll) I think 105 - 103. We were rated in the top 10.

Then, THEN, Gary Tompkins gets mono and misses about 15 games...and never really recovers. Snapshot, great scorer, Lafester, great player, Grayer, and fantastic point guard, Tompkins.

This was our second best team of all-time, since I was born in 1964, second only to the elite eight, 1999-2000 team. If I was a player on that team watching the DVD I'd look at it and say, are you kidding me.....How could the entire production dept miss that.

I agree that that team may have been runner up to the Elite Eight team. And that win against Purdue was epic.

This was our second best team of all-time, since I was born in 1964, second only to the elite eight, 1999-2000 team. If I was a player on that team watching the DVD I'd look at it and say, are you kidding me.....How could the entire production dept miss that.

Thompkins missed five games, not 15.

That team had the potential to be great, but still finished under .500 in league play, lost the first game in the Big Eight tourney, and was a first-round NCAA team thanks to the nonconference schedule. You can't exactly characterize that as one of the best teams in history.

......and was a disappointment due to the absence of Tompkins. They were top ten good bottom line. Tompkins never was the same when he came back. You beat No. 3 in their backyard and that speaks for itself. They were great until the mono. struck.

That was a fun season, although it ended with kind of a thud. Winning on the road in conference was not a strong point of that team. But they could beat anybody at home. Grayer was the man.

Nope never happened. Like someone else said he was finished by 1980.
