.

My son and I are both very novice drummers. He plays drums in a band through a music club at ISU.

Anyway, we have two kits. His kit - which I still play on is a Percussion Plus with Sabian Cymbals 14" high hat, 16" crash, and a 20" crash/ride.

The kit I have is an older Tama also with Zildgan Cymbals 14" high hat, 16" crash, and a 20" crash/ride.

We both like the Zildgan for the sound quality and durability but the Sabian's are just as good. We also have a few Paiste cymbals that we put up once in a while. Got a few odd balls that he likes to add to his kit now and again - mainly Camber and a few no names.

Not that I'm the best at giving advise - I'm mainly a guitar player - so take it for what it's worth.

I have an old Pearl Custom set with Zildjian Cymbals.
14" hi hats. 16" & 18" crash. 20" ride.
I haven't played it for awhile, but really loved the sound of it.

Are you looking to do any recording or just basic playing around? That will help determine what kind of cymbals to get.

I dabbled a little as a teen but never took lessons or anything. Now my two daughters, with no pushing from me, have chosen percussion as their band instruments and at age 42 I finally...I mean the girls got a drum set.

I've been playing for 10+ years as well. I mostly play on my electronic kit at home. I got used to playing it in college because it was the only way I could have a drum set in an apartment. My normal set is a Tama and it needs new heads badly. It still has the original cymbals that came with it, the Zildjian ZHT set that are just absolute crap. I did eventually buy an A Custom 20" Ping Ride.

I play at church every month or so and I actually just recently started up a cover band in central Iowa here in the last couple of months, so now I am really looking to upgrade my cymbals. They're just so expensive that it's hard to pull the trigger on $500-$700 of cymbals at once. I've looked on ebay a bit but haven't done it yet.

I'm trying to decide between the 14" A Custom Master-sound Hi-Hat (which I play at church) and the 14" A Custom Rezo Hi-Hat. The only crash cymbal I have is embarrassingly the 18" Crash/Ride ZHT that came with my set. It is truly terrible. I'm looking for some A Custom Crash's as well.

I was only ever a novice, but always used Zildjian crashes.

Okay, what kind of drummer are you all. Animal or Goku?

How are you liking them so far?

My main concern is the hi-hat. I actually play those exact crash cymbals at church and I like them well enough, but the HH is an A Custom Mastersound as opposed to just straight A Customs. I like the Mastersound well enough, although its a bit bright for my taste. I probably shouldn't be too picky though, because any HH is far better than the crappy one I have.

I'm actually considering buying the same set and just selling the ride, because I already have an A Custom ride.

If I could sell the ride for $175 or so, It'd then be about $575 for the 2 crashes and hi-hat, which seems like a pretty good deal considering they retail separately for around $800 combined.

My wife's sister is dating a guy who manages a Guitar Center in another state, so I'm going to try to see if there's any way I can get a discount on them. Reading online it sounds like GC employee's typically get things right at cost.

I play guitar and have done vocals for a bunch of metal bands over the years, but never owned a drum set. I can play a little, so always wanted to get a kit, but just haven't yet..... My 8 year old really wants to take drum lessons. What would you guys recommend for a kids set?

percussion plus makes some starter kits. pearl export is a good starter kit. don't buy anything labeled "practice" or "beginner" though. just a lower end base model and you'll be fine.

Have Evans heads on a Percussion Plus kit, spend money on heads instead of a kit brand.. Money will go further and if you take the time to tune both heads you can get a pretty good sound.

As far as cymbals, have Sabians. I think I have the cheap BB series (Can't remember since I have been in Ames for awhile now). I want to say they have a brass finish but they are very affordable and get the job done. For me it was about getting the pieces to practice on rather than one piece that sounds top notch with nothing else up front.
