The 2013-2014 Cyclones were legit National Championship contenders before Georges Niang broke his ankle in the tournament. This is not hyperbole. They were led by All-American Melvin Ejim and and arguably the most impactful transfer in the history of the program, All-American Deandre Kane. Other notable players were future pro (but redshirting) Abdel Nader, future pro Monte Morris, and future pro Naz Long, future pro Matt Thomas. And again, the greatest 4 year player of all-time, future pro Georges Niang.

An offensive juggernaut.

Who's winning?

Georges broke his foot. But this team probably beats that one because of the level of defense we play. Kind of like good pitching breathing good hitting.

Honestly it probably looks a lot like it did last night. Strength on strength. In a 10 game sample. I'd take this years guys 6-4

7 game series? If I absolutely had to choose, it would be tough to bet against the defense that this team plays.

the 13-14 team would get down by 15 and then come back and win by near double digits.
When Monte Morris started to shine at the end of the season and was hitting clutch shots at the end of big games...I really thought that team had a chance for a final 4 / championship.

But...both teams would have lost to the Tinsley / Fizer final 8 team. That was the year IMO that we were the best team in the nation.

Following discussion in the 'best modern ISU team' thread, this type of thing was on my mind while watching the game last night. I prefer to wait until the season concludes (or at least closer to it) before trying to compare. I know it's only a fun thought experiment, but feels too incomplete for true assessment.

The 13/14 team obviously had a lot more talent but really seemed to struggle against teams that were methodical on offense and played top end defense. They struggled to dictate tempo.

Like earlier poster said probably pretty similar to game last night. We forced them into our style, dictated tempo, and KState only scored 70+ by hitting 6/7 three pointers. Tough to come back from deficits when other team wont let you dictate pace of play.

I think Ejim would be the difference. He was a better individual rebounder than anyone on this team. I think rebounds would be the difference. Our team this year is a great rebounding team, but he was elite as an individual.

I'm leaning toward this year's team because TJ>Fred, but it is interesting to compare the two.
- 13/14 team was elite offensively and OK defensively (9th and 55th, respectively)
- This year's team is OK offensively and elite defensively (57th and 8th, respectively as of today)

13-14, I was too young to remember the early 2000s teams so 13-14 is the best team I ever watched. I just think they were so versatile. They could kill you from the 3 but also slice and dice you with inside footwork. I would be interested to see how 22-23 would do on defense against Niang and Ejim.

That’s a tough question, depends on how the 13’14 team was shooting the three. If that team was on it’d be a tough decision but this years team would probably beat them 7 out of 10 times imo

That would be a great game. One that just comes down to who is hitting shots that day.

The infamous Charlie Bell agrees with you. Had a nice conversation with him about the "charge" call.
