    Liberty Bowl postgame thread

I don't think Campbell is cerebral enough to take this team much higher. He seems to overestimate the similarity of football coaching to investing, where making reactionary adjustments instead of sticking to a particular long-term plan can work against you. That's just my subjective impression...

*** Official IOWA STATE vs #1 North Carolina Game(Day) Thread ***

Perhaps it thinks we're playing at home? In any case, the line is -5.0 UNC, so not too bad.

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

From the same site, an article very skeptical it will come to anything: Oklahoma State Joining a Different Conference?

    Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Sounded like some small-potatoes TV deal, along with an inter-conference championship in Las Vegas that is little different from an ordinary bowl game (except perhaps that it would be played before CFP selection rather than after). It may or may not delay the inevitable, but that's all it will...

    What will ISU be ranked?

If you think we play poorly when ranked, you should see how we play when unranked... It's only an illusion that we play worse when highly ranked. To be highly ranked in the first place, the performance leading up to it has to be especially good. The higher the performance, the more improbable...

    Up to #17 in AP

That is an excellent point, which I totally overlooked. Thank you!

    Up to #17 in AP

Right now, Iowa is ranked higher than Iowa State in almost every computer ranking. See: Computer Rankings Composite I hope we beat Iowa and cause the computers to adjust themselves accordingly with the new information that provides. If we lose, people on here will start talking about "not...

    Rankings Drop?

As a matter of fact, both political elections and Heisman selections are affected by the voting system used. A ranked-preference voting system may indeed produce a different result than a simple plurality. With regards to the AP poll, you seem not to understand what the actual number that...

    Rankings Drop?

This is absolutely mathematically correct. That people are disagreeing with this analysis is a commentary on the poor state of our educational system. Yes, if every sports writer thought we were the 26th best team, then we would receive zero votes. Meanwhile, one person thinks UCLA is the 25th...

Did the high expectations kill this season?

Iowa State's expected final record, per Massey, is 6.72-5.28, or 7-5 if you round. Computer rakings aren't highly accurate with only 4 games played, but it seems that we'll be playing for an ordinary bowl game, with above 50-50 chances of making one.

    Rankings Drop?

The problem is this: The AP poll is supposed to be a ranking of playing strength, not a ranking of accomplishment. If Team A beats three ranked teams and Team B beats the bottom three, but Team B is the stronger team, then Team B is supposed to be ranked ahead of Team A despite Team A's...

    Big 12 Expansion (new thread)

Apparently I'm the only one skeptical of the claims in this tweet. More likely this guy or his sources have listening comprehension issues.

American targeting Mountain West powers among handful of expansion candidates in realignment That's an interesting thought.

    Big 12 Expansion (new thread)

Actually, unless you play infinitely many games, no system, including round robin, is going to reveal the true strength of teams with absolute certainty. "Champion" and "best team" are two very different terms.

    Big 12 Expansion (new thread)

Well, you'd be going from 3 games to 11 games, which is more than a tripling of games, so....

UCF was founded in 1963 as Florida Tech

Not to mention the reason they changed it in the first place is because they expanded their academics beyond the technology focus.

UCF was founded in 1963 as Florida Tech

Correct. Directions are used simply because the two primary names for state schools (XX and XX State) are taken. The only reason they have a negative connotation is because in small states, the third university and beyond are usually not as prominent.

    Big 12 Expansion (new thread)

I agree. As the saying goes, if you can't join them, beat them. It might be fun to be in a conference of equals that is focused on increasing its stock rather than just maintaining a position at the top.

    GameDay in Ames next week.

I'm not saying the placebo effect isn't real, but I would prefer if we could get past it, because I like cardinal and gold. But yes, I would rather win with black than lose with our colors. Just wish we could represent ourselves more fully when we win.

    GameDay in Ames next week.

Our colors are cardinal and gold. I hope we can wear those colors and not feel a superstitious need to wear black in order to perform well.
