Question about formatting a computer
One thing to consider is that the hard drive might be failing, which could have corrupted your windows install. This would result I similar symptoms. I suggest you put Ubuntu 14.04 on a flash drive, boot into it and backup the built in HDD. -

I am only going to nitpick on this part of the comment, but have you just tried typing "calc" at the start screen? I actually like Win8, but I don't use it for work. Other than the simplest of things, the desktop/settings search also sucks. I much prefer Ubuntu 12.04 and Unity's search. -

In projectors, it would be great. The limits of 1080p become noticeable when you have a 100+ inch screen 12 feet away. A big issue for those with acoustically transparent screens is whether or not your screen will work well with 4k projection. -
