    12/31 Road Conditions

Around 10 AM they were absolute crap on the south side of DSM. The main roads aren't too bad. Mostly just wet. Getting to them is the problem. The side streets are a sheet of ice. It was getting better around noon, but it's still not great out there. I saw at least a half dozen incidents...

    Kindle question

Whispernet is Kindle's 3G wireless network. Buy a kindle with whispernet, and you get lifetime 3g access for it for free. It only works in the US, I believe, though.

    Friday night (weekend) beer thread

I had an eric's ale tonight, part of the lips of faith series from New Belgium. Very good beer. If you're into sours, check it out.

    Car Issue

Could also be a relay or a fuse, or possibly a battery cable or connector. On some older vehicles (my van, for instance), there is a smaller accesory cable from the battery to the fuse block that can come loose. You'll have no power at all to any of your accessories, and the engine won't do...

    LA Times Favorite Beers

Banana flavor is actually quite common, especially in wheat beers and Belgian beers. I don't consider it a dealbreaker at all. Quite enjoyable, depending on the style. That being said, this is a pretty awful list of beers, for the most part. I think it's generally beers for people who don't...

    Need a New Driver

Congrats on probably buying a counterfeit club. I avoid E-Bay like the plague when it comes to buying new clubs. I'd say a good 80% of the clubs on there are counterfeit. Even the used ones. I also tend to avoid Taylormade's latest stuff just because it's always overpriced and doesn't hold...

    New Belgium Ranger

Frosty pint is about the worst thing you can do to good beer. Firstly, getting a beer ice cold doesn't let you really taste the beer (that's why it's popular with the macros which try to eliminate essentially all flavor), and secondly, that frost == water, and I don't really like watering down...

What Happened to Bobo at the ISF?

You do realize that the ACLU would be the ones likely defending him after he was sued by someone who had their feelings hurt, don't you?

    Question about my router

Does the wireless signal drop, or does the internet connection drop? Wireless signal dropping means the radio is messed up somehow, and you probably need a new one. Internet just stopping working could be a variety of issues, including your ISP or cabling between the two.

    best place to upload photos?

Picasa or Flickr. If you go Flickr, pony up the 20 bucks and get a pro account. I like Flickr better than Picasa, but YMMV.

Simple program to make computer games?

He's probably better off building levels for existing games, or doing simple games in Flash or HTML5. The low level programming for current 3D games is astonishingly complicated. It's sort of like asking "is there a simple way for my son to build an F-35 and fly it". There are people who's...

I use Netvibes, which I just migrated to from Google Reader.

What online news source do you use?

I read everything through an RSS reader. Get most of my "headline" coverage from CNN, BBC, KCCI, The Daily Beast Cheatsheet, and the Des Moines Register. Without getting too political, for somewhat non-partisan opinion and more in-depth articles, I like to read The Economist daily blogs (in...

Running a 5K tomorrow; need advice

Interval training, Fartleks, whatever you want to call it. It's the best way to get your time down. Even something not so structured helps. Try and run a mile at a faster than comfortable pace (if you're running 9 minute miles, try a 8:30 pace), and then just try to complete the run...

    Shoes with toes

Barefoot running is the latest "craze". It actually makes some amount of sense. Our bodies weren't designed to run in cushioned shoes, but with little or no padding or support. Then again, we weren't designed to run on concrete or asphalt either, so I think there's a happy medium. Not really...

    Shoes with toes

There are a ton of people I know of that use them. They say they are great for runs less than about 5 miles or so. After that, the lack of padding gets to be a bit difficult to deal with.

Running a 5K tomorrow; need advice

If I were you, I would rest. Maybe stretch out a bit, or go for a easy 1.5 mile run or so if you feel like you REALLY need to. You're going to finish. It's just a 5k.

Sump (Sub) Pumps or Tiling? That is the question

This thread got me thinking. Does anyone know of a good plumber/plumbing contractor for installing backflow prevention devices in Des Moines? That's my major concern where I live, with my house being built in the late 60s, and on a bit of a hill.
