New 32 story residential tower, 9 screen theater proposed for downtown Des Moines

"fair markets". I rest my case. Who decides what is fair...and the fact that someone is "deciding" blows up the concept of free market capitalism. I"m not saying you have to be in favor of free markets...just please recognize what it is....and what it isn't. Not going to go into much...

Viking-inspired pub opening in East Village Des Moines on July 31

I think most restaurateurs are looking realistically for a good location. How many are really "great" and if they are, now much is rent and can they afford "great"? Again...you have to ignore Truman's success and Mad Meatballs to make the claim that this location isn't good enough to run a...

Please explain how it is not "economic" over political? Don't political candidates bring an economic philosophy to their candidacy?

I can't speak for metro DSM, but a couple articles (I'll try to find ) have pointed out that DSM is one of the cities with the highest # of restaurants per capita in the US...so something must be pretty favorable about the environment here.

It is clearly an economic evaluation...unless you really believe those willing to finance projects like this are in favor of the economic policies put forth by some of the candidates.

From what I hear, it is a continue challenge for the developer to secure the necessary financing. I think this shows the challenges of trying to build something this big in a city the size of DSM. There appears to be a committed hotel chain to take several floors and a movie operator. But as...

I'm not saying it is 100% arrived yet, but if this were a bad location, Truman's would have closed and yet it has been opened for a few yrs now. Also, Mad Meatball did well in this location and sold because the got the right offer. (fyi...Mad Meatball will be reopening south of MLK Pkway in...

I think you are right to a degree. That said, Taco Hangover is probably not a good example as they have closed several locations.

IMO, part of the appeal of Fong's in the location on 4th St, downtown, in a former Chinese restaurant amid several other things to do within walking distance. I've never been to the one in Ankeny, but it hard to replicate that feel in a new build.

Disagree. There are 3 huge apartment/loft complexes in the process of opening and in construction on E 6th Ave. That, and Iowans them them some parking lots and this is a place that offers one with plenty of street parking as well.

They have been very successful, but one black mark, They opened the first grocery store on Court Ave (can't recall the name) and Shorty's downstairs to help fund it. The grocery store closed and they ended up selling Shorty's (although it is still open). Obviously something wasn't working as...

Honest question. Why? Is that any of your business? I get why we might all be curious to know this, but it is a bit naive to think customers of any business have the right to know this information . In the end, I think the writing is on the wall. Corporate misread the market and when...

Money Market Investing and New Home Purchasing

I was only referring to short term investors. I do get a little worried when people think they can successfully go in and out of the market when referring to their long term investments. Few, if any of us, are that smart...

Money Market Investing and New Home Purchasing

The OP is asking about short term investments. Not overall long term investing. I stated a fact (historically record long bull market) and asked a prudent question (how much longer can it last?). Also reiterated pretty common investment related advice in that you don't generally want to be...

Just remember, it is only a loss on paper when the market dips. You don't lock in the loss unless you actually sell when down. If you are investing long term, hang tight!

Does anybody know of a good locksmith in the area?

I'm am far from a handyman and have no problem paying people to fix things around the house. That said, this is a pretty easy do-it-yourself fix. That said, Stauss is a good one out of Urbandale.

Regardless how long people have been saying it (hopefully they weren't saying it "for years" since the record was hit less than a year ago -- last March), it doesn't change the sentiment. It would appear to be a very risky time to get aggressive or too creative with funds that are meant to be...
