Wow, I'm fired up about the new coach!

I'm not sure where everyone is getting this from. Currently Iowa State and Murray State have the same number of NBAers - 1. Murray State has a kid who will likely be drafted - big deal.

    Keeping TJ

This is a silly diatribe. TJ is going to bring significant established P5 recruiting. He's got great connections. He's been an assistant coach in the B12 and P12. There is immense value there! I suspect the conversation with Pollard went something like this ... "I'd love to keep TJ Otz...

Hoiberg shoots down Otzelberger conspiracy theory

TJ kept his job transitioning from McD to FH ... I believe FH only knew him by reputation. I'm sure whomever gets the job (if it isn't TJ) will retain him for at least a year. Relationships to players, recruiting ability, continuity ... That is if him wants to remain with I-State.

*** COACHING SEARCH THREAD: Friday, June 5 ***

Jamie Dixon leaving Pitt and the ACC for I-State and the B12. A bit surprise if it does happens I also wonder whether it might be a ploy on his (his agent's) part to extend or improve his current contract.

*** COACHING SEARCH THREAD: Friday, June 5 ***

Let me ask another question ... If TJ Otz does not get the job, I suspect the next coach may want to keep him and/or be encouraged to keep him but what if TJ Otz does not want to stay? What if he were to follow FH to the Bulls? I think a lot of people are assuming TJ remains as lead...

    Bothers me the most

You and 3rdGenStarter are just making my point ... CyForce (and others) seems to feel that if Hoiberg were to remain at ISU that I-State could eventually ascend to "perennial power status". His words - not mine. He's not looking realistically at the program as it compares to others throughout...

    Bothers me the most

And how do you achieve a perennial power status? Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas ... will always be regarded ahead of I-State if for no other reason than they have more money. I-State could become "Wisconsin-like" (and is probably very close to that level already) but even then ... do you think...

    Bothers me the most

Seriously ... the Chicago Bulls ... of the NBA ... just called you up and said I want you to coach this team and you think that most rationale people would not be hard pressed to strongly consider that opportunity? Iowa State is a great place, but it is NOT a top 20 collegiate destination. Take...

How many years before program is back into dormancy?

And I know many have their doubts about TJ but he is ready for this shot, he already possesses 2/3rds of what he needs for this job ... the ability to recruit and he just has to be smart enough to surround himself with good people. TJ coming back from Washington after one year in retrospect has...

Hoiberg Watch 2015: Friday, May 29 Thread

    A) Its the Jimmy's and Joe's not the X's and O's B) TJ recruited a certain style of athlete to Ames, which did not work under Greg McD but did work under Hoiberg's era almost immediately. C) TJ supported and promoted the transfer destination which also helped with the style of athlete they...

Official 2015 Hoiberg NBA Speculation Thread

TJ recruits the kind of players Hoiberg has been successful with ... in fact you could argue it was TJs guys Fred has been running with. Interestingly ... IMO the kind of guys TJ was recruiting didn't fit the philosophy McDermott wanted to play. Big jump with no head coaching experience though!

RECRUITING: Nick Noskowiak a target for 2015

Noskowiak has a really weird personal situation that creates an interesting dynamic for any team recruiting him. I agree with your evaluation that he is a bit more of a scorer than Koenig. Not quite as big and certainly not as athletic. Will probably be able to come in a play (some) right...

RECRUITING: Nick Noskowiak a target for 2015

This is probably the end of Marquette kids for Iowa State. The kind of player Steve Wojo is recruiting is different from the players Buzz Williams was getting. The whole transition from Buzz to Wojo helped foster some transferring.

RECRUITING: Nick Noskowiak a target for 2015

Henry Ellenson's brother (a transfer from Minnesota) is at Marquette with 2 years yet to play. Ellenson is more likely to jump to the NBA before transferring.

    Otz is back

He left for Washington to expand his resume, play for a good coach in Romar but the state of Washington's bball program is not good. They had high expectations and as was said the wheels fell off. Part of the reason to leave IMO was TJ did not even get an opportunity to interview for the Drake...

    Otz is back

Silly post, Otzelberger was getting guys who could play but not in the system that McDermott wanted to run. The guys TJ recruits fit extremely well with the way Hoiberg runs ISU currently. Remember back to pre-Hoiberg days? Recruiting anyone to ISU is a lot more difficult than it is right...

    Update on replacing T.J. Otzelberger

    But ... the coaching aspect of assistant coaches is over-rated IMO. The general job description of assistants: 1) Recruiting 50% 2) Video tape/game prep/scouting 20% 3) Off-season development/skill work 10% 4) Keeping players eligible 10% 5) Strategic X's & O's development 10% With the head...

    Update on replacing T.J. Otzelberger

Yes that is every head coach but an elite recruiter (and IMO Otzelberger was an elite recruiter) gets prospects to consider the school. Head coaches such as FH have to close the deal - two different job descriptions. But my point was simply - people stating that FH can easily pick up the...

BREAKING: Otzelberger accepts position at Washington

Not really but a lot of posters make it seem like the recruiting part of his job will be easily absorbed by others including FH and that is simply not the case. TJ is young relates well with recruits, has a zillion contacts, is a relentless traveller and was constantly on the road. 90% of what...

BREAKING: Otzelberger accepts position at Washington

Not saying it was an ISU thing ... your example you gave is a good one ... but frankly if he (TJ) is not going to get an opportunity to interview after these last two years then it is probably time to stir things up a bit.
