University Nebraska Omaha to drop wrestling, football

I'll post a link to the audio of Trev's interview once it becomes available. A recap of what he said: 1) Said that the Division II structure at UNO was not working financially for UNO. They looked long and hard at going to Division III, but decided that was not a good move for the...

University Nebraska Omaha to drop wrestling, football

And that may be right. I heard on a different program that it was a requirement. This afternoon I believe Alberts will be asked directly if those sports are a requirement or not.

University Nebraska Omaha to drop wrestling, football

Depends how you define successful program? Will UNO ever be successful nationally at the Division I level in basketball? Of course not. Probably not even regionally. They only need to be competitive within the Summit League. Do that and you get a NCAA tournament shot and the money and...

University Nebraska Omaha to drop wrestling, football

Trev is going to do an interview on Omaha radio this afternoon where he will be asked about a lot of this stuff. I'll try to post a recap of questions asked and answers given.

University Nebraska Omaha to drop wrestling, football

As the other poster stated above. UNO wrestling may be self-sustaining at the DII level, but it takes a lot of work to get that done. They'd have to probably double their budget to try to compete at the Division I level. They won't be able to self-sustain themselves at Division I.

University Nebraska Omaha to drop wrestling, football

Yes, UNO will add soccer and golf. It is a requirement for Summit membership. I hope wrestling can be saved, but it seems to the administration that it is prohibitive to keep it. Finances at UNO have been an absolute mess for quite some time, and that is what is driving all of this.

University Nebraska Omaha to drop wrestling, football

Hockey is the best program in terms of making money/ability to make money and visibility for the university. As far as actual success, wrestling is by far No. 1. But successful wrestling does little to pay the bills.

University Nebraska Omaha to drop wrestling, football

If UNO were to keep wrestling, as another poster said, that budget would have to rise significantly to compete at the Division I level. And in order to keep wrestling, the school would probably have to add one or maybe even two more women's sports to keep Title IX in check.......something which...

Think it's bad being an ISU fan in the state of Iowa?

UNO A.D. said he didn't want to get in the game of playing big money football games. Most FCS schools lose almost $2 million per year in football the way it is. He said UNO football would need two "big money games" to help stay afloat. The result of those games is the team gets beat up...

Think it's bad being an ISU fan in the state of Iowa?

UNO wrestling is not self-sufficient. Their annual budget is over $250,000 per year. They don't bring in anywhere near that type of revenue.

Think it's bad being an ISU fan in the state of Iowa?

On average, FCS football teams lose $1.8 million per year. For a school like UNO, who is already in a financial mess, it does not make any sense to move football to Division I as well. I think they could save wrestling however, if they wanted to.

Think it's bad being an ISU fan in the state of Iowa?

Hate to see this move from UNO, but it may be a great move on the long-term. Has nothing to do with the school in Lincoln. UNO athletics has been in a financial mess for quite some time, and this move (cutting football) is a way for them to cut the heavy subsidies that they rely on just to try...

    Big XII TV Negotiations

I just posted it as a talking point. Personally, I think the Big 12 will do fine in the next round of TV negotiations. The value of the league itself may not have risen since the departure of NU and CU, but the market value of televised college athletics has, and ESPN has pretty much shown...

Colorado about to suffer first conference loss

I think Nebraska is a pretty decent team this year. After the close win over ISU, NU played Mizzou tough in Columbia despite going down in a big hole early....they came back and made the game competitive. And they gave KU all they wanted in Lawrence last weekend. NU could very well go 8-8 or...

    Pelini to Miami?

Bo and Miami's AD are friends. It's possible that he is talking with Bo just to get his feel on some up and coming coaches and/or defensive minds. Then again, maybe he really is interested in the job.
