Still some issues, but they are getting some official storm reports out...slowly. Should see more fill in overnight, another big wave maybe between 7 AM and 8 AM.

@alarson With the way the heavy band has held together out West, looks like it might happen now...or close enough, especially Dallas County, maybe NW 1/3 or 1/2 of Polk.

I think the term I used was giant ass snow, thanks.

@CychiatricWard That's the Aiport measurement just before 6 PM. I wouldn't be surprised if you have more. Judging from the radar, I think the airport will be a bit on the lower side compared to the rest of Des Moines. My wife said there was 3.5 in the driveway at my house at a quarter to...

Totals in SW Iowa are at/over a foot. Unfortunately, there's an outage with NWS so they aren't able to issue their storm reports officially right now so the IEM can scrape them for this map. I'll try to post them as we hear them.

Yeah that will start to be the end of the 1, 1.5"/hr rates, and then as the whole system pivots and moves east, lighter snow should continue into the overnight.

I still think under that. 8-11" looks like the number for the West Side. They're ahead of the airport pace too.

This is also why snow totals get so tricky, change the temperature where the snow is forming at, it switches the liquid ratio. Same if you move the lift around. Or your lift is strong, but the humidity is low. Lots of things can be off by just a hair and have a compounding error effect that...

So, if you're interested, this is a cross section view of the atmosphere. Red squiggly line is the temp as you go up. Warmer to right, colder to left. The little yellow stretch on that line is the Dendritic Growth Zone (DGZ). It's the area where the temp is between -12 and -18 C. If you're...

Yep, I think 10 inches at the Des Moines airport would put the Airport season total to the average for the entire winter. And that's even with the airport only registering an inch or two in that October storm where Ankeny got 9.

I think Des Moines is pretty well locked in for 6+ at this point. Probably approaching north of 70% chance. There's always things that could happen that would theoretically mess up the forecast, but I don't think the probabilities are very high to push Des Moines lower than that, unless...

I will put on my Earl cap for a second and say just about every model right now is putting out 10 to 15 from 80 to Missouri. So this may be as close to the real deal as we've been in a while. Can't remember the last time we've had a textbook storm like this, four corners low, tracks over St...
