Can't say this is an unusual dollar amount for arena repairs for a nationally prominent team, and for the HOF Coach Mulkey. But there may be an argument in relative terms of the state of Louisiana's finances...please send more tax money:

The Guardian's Poet Wolfe explains, "The last-minute line funding renovations at the facility nicknamed the PMAC came at the request of Kim Mulkey, the women's basketball team's head coach who is known for her flamboyant fashion sense as well as her outspokenness about the venue's need for repairs.

This comes up from time to time down there, usually with the football program.

While public money should go to public interests, there’s probably a conversation to be had on whether NCAA sports facilities are truly a public or private interest… especially when the state in question features some of the lowest quality of life indicators in the US.

Louisiana ranks near the bottom of all states in economy, education and health so, of course, they spend the money on a basketball temple. Got a peek inside how Louisiana works during the post-Katrina recovery while working on restoration of the levees, walls and pumping stations. Can't say more without caving this but it was not pretty.

She already has the best team money can buy, seems like a waste of taxpayer dollars when there has been no shortage of private funds to pay for the players she's been bringing in.

When was the last time the State Legislature in Iowa provided any tax dollars for any athletic facilities at the University of Iowa or Iowa State University? Been a long time!

Ask Jeff Kaufmann why I bet he won't tell you the real reason.
