The Athletic top 25 for 23-24 season

Anyone expecting Iowa State to be in any preseason Top 25 is going to be disappointed…for no reason.

I mean…we lost 5 of our top 6 leading scorers, and arguably our top 2 (maybe more) defenders, from a team that went 19-14; 9-9 last year.

Maybe I misunderstood the OP though.

EDIT: Oh…and The Athletic can eat **** anyway. Garbage site.

hardcore ISU bball homers might be surprised. i think we know we're way more talented and better than last year. but outsiders don't.

conf realignment already got me....forgot to include Houston at #13

welcome back Kelvin Sampson.

I’m fine with us not being ranked but it’s fun to ask what logical reason Texas tech has to be ranked in football vs ISU in basketball? Is it the slightly less success the past two years or the good but inferior recruiting class?

Texas Tech in Texas. Automatic football bump.

Purdue will always disappoint. Not worried that they will do anything.

Is there a prop bet at the beginning of the year that Purdue will play under their ncaa seed? That has to be the safest bet if all time lately even though technically you’re picking an underdog.

I guess I don't see not being ranked as a huge slap in the face. Now if conference pre-season rankings have us ranked last or something like that then yeah, we are being disrespected.

Ehh, whatever. In this world of rosters looking completely different every year, schools that have the most turnover in the starters are typically going to be rated lower than those with continuity or upperclassmen.

Given NIL, that means schools like Iowa State will usually be rated lower to start the year as we're going to have younger teams (even if stud recruits) or older guys that aren't the elite tier of transfers.

The Athletic is an awful organization. I don’t get peoples fascination with them. I wouldn’t put much stock in them even if they were free. Us not being too 25 isn’t a big deal but if they truly only have 3 Big 12 teams they are doing some hard drugs.

I think Chris Williams and Jared discussed this at the end of last season but IMO preseason and early season rankings will mean less moving forward.

With NIL and a growing transfer portal there will be more and more teams that have high number of new players each year. They might a couple of months to to gel but come tournament time will be contenders.

It's mostly a collective of unemployed writers from around he country. It's really hit and miss with a LOT of misses. For god's sake, Scott Dochterman Hawkeye slobbers for them.

Meh, pretty much every top 25 I've seen within the past month has only those four B12 teams ranked, in some order (KU at the top in all of them). No. 13 is lowest rank for UH among the ones I've seen, I think.
