Students are slowly trickling back into Ames! What is your favorite food that you associate with the town of Ames, or Iowa State? Super dog? Hickory Park? Dining center cereal?

Pizza Pit, between their wings, sandwiches, and pizza that was $5 single topping after 9pm probably the 1 place I ordered the most from and still make a point to get some food before basketball games sometimes. Another one was pokey stixs from Gumby's which unfortunately is closed. Homestyle Chinese which also closed was another favorite of mine.

During VEISHEA it was the cherry pies from somewhere in McKay and Dairy Science club ice cream.

Currently it is the ISU creamery they do a great job with multiple flavors. I'll visit the Alumni Center patio to get some at the UNI fb game.

People can hate on it but a saucy southerner from Hickory Park still makes me think of ISU.

I know it's not there anymore, but I basically lived there when I was at ISU.... DaVinci's. I think that was the name? It was behind the gas station on Welch. Best subs I've ever had to this day.

Oh.... and Great Plains Pizza too!
DaVinci's has been long gone since early 2000's I believe but yes they had really good subs. I think they had some kind of philly cheesteak or garlic roast beef or something that was the bomb.

Damn I ate a lot of $5 pizza pit pizza back in the day. Always had coupons in the Daily.

Is the Daily even published anymore?
The book store used to have coupon books at the start of the semester and PP would have some good deals in there like BOGO sandwiches. We'd grab several of those books when we found them and use the same coupons all year.

Not one place in particular but back in my day, People's, Paddy's, Diamond Dave's all had buck burger night and most of them were actually good.

Diamond Daves I havent heard that name in a long time.

My fave now is Great Plains, and its my default place to go if hungry in Ames.

But in school, had zero money to go out. Pizza Pit super cheap was about it for purchased food, so let's call that a memory.

We did learn to make poor man's big macs in the dining center though. Take their regular garbage burger, throw on all the veg, and squirt a packet of the industrial thousand island from the salad bar on top and that was the secret sauce! Made those Korean war surplus burgers taste good.

Food service was also the first place I ever saw or ate a bagel. That was kind of an exotic food back then. Also, food service bagels were substantially harder than a patio paver. I thought bagels were supposed to be dried out and hard until years later...

Thanks for reminding me how old I am! Yeah, I graduated in '91.

I don't remember anything about the food at People's, but I sure do remember the drinks and the great live music there (Sundogs anyone?)! Come to think of it, maybe I never actually ate any food there!
