Anyone that is overseeing the disaster on the corner of 24th St. & Stange as well as SE. 16th St. and South Duff. Give yourself an extra special pat on the back due to your epic level of incompetence.

There has been absolutely zero sense of urgency since these projects began. You guys obviously couldn’t care less about inconveniencing Ames residents. Your boss is clearly putting zero pressure on you to get the job done, that you are putting zero pressure on the contractors to finish it up.

Yes, I’m mad bro
Yes, I’m triggered
Lol

As someone who deals with these types of projects, the general public will never understand the complexity of what is in the public right of way.

Knowing nothing about these projects, I'm willing to bet a lot of money that a franchise utility (Mid-Am, Lumen (CenturyLink) or Mediacom) is holding something up. There is little to nothing cities can do to make these utilities take care of the lines they have in construction projects in a specific timeframe.

But that patch job all the way up Hyland took like five minutes and it shows. I’d hate to ride a bike on that street.
The most frustrating Ames project at the moment is the downtown park across from city hall that was supposed to be completed this summer and is now a weed patch with zero progress for months. I’ve heard there was a design issue that forced a redesign.

They only ***** I have is the tore up 16th and Duff twice for no reason.

There has been a special level of incompetence on this project. Even the signage at the intersection of 16th and Duff is wrong. I feel bad for the businesses impacted.

Don't expect any relief in the immediate future

From Aug 4th news release:
"The South 16th Street and South Duff Avenue improvements are being constructed in stages. Completion of the overall project is anticipated by the end of 2023. The City has contracted with Con-Struct Inc. for this project."

In my experience as an engineer, in recent years roadway project delays are typically caused by utilities rather than the agency.

Good old "smart growth" Ames. You'd figure they would set hard timelines on construction projects that affect their highest revenue sources...game day traffic. But it's Ames.
Are you saying there are no stipulated substantial and final completion dates on this project? I have never encountered that before on a public project.

They most certainly have. However, with inflation on all construction materials, public projects are having loser timelines for completion as it allows that contractors to be more flexible, thus, lower bidding prices.

Projects don't start overnight. There is typically years of design and planning that go on. Some of the projects happening this year were put together in 2020/2021, and their initial budgets have increased pretty dramatically with post COVID inflation, forcing cities to get creative to make sure they can actually happen.

The S Duff/S 16th expansion was always going to be a major inconvenience. But when Ames, in their infinite wisdom, completed the S Grand extension and funneled that much more traffic to S 16th before fixing the intersection that compounded the problems.

Ames has a municipal electric utility, not MidAmerican
