Rumblings and rumors of new space are now official.

Actions Requested:
Recommend the Board approve the proposed:
Permission to Proceed with Project Planning for the: Lied Recreation Athletic Center – Remodel and Expansion project, including the Design Professional Selection process.

Lied Recreation Athletic Center – Remodel and Expansion
Executive Summary:
Iowa State University requests Board approval of the proposed Permission to Proceed with Project Planning to build a 16,000 square foot addition to the southeast corner and renovate 45,000 square feet (20% of the building) of ISU’s Lied Recreation Athletic Center. The estimated project budget of $22,000,000 to $23,000,000 would be funded by Private Giving and Athletic Department Operating Revenue.

Background: Built in 1990, the Lied Recreation Athletic Center is approximately 66 percent occupied by ISU Recreation Services and 34 percent by the ISU Athletic Department. The project would expand and collocate weight rooms, locker rooms and sports medicine areas for two ISU Athletics’ programs: Wrestling, and Track and Field. Recreation Services and the Athletic Department would exchange some space to improve adjacencies for both. Recreation Service’s space allocation would not decrease through this project.

This is great news!

I will be curious to see the details on % of funding that comes from private giving vs. athletic dept revenue

Nice to see Wrestling get some 'Keep up with the Jones' money now that Football has near state of the art facilities. I'm sure we'll all get requests to chip in & I'm OK with that, although my athletic giving funds are pretty much fully allocated.

Nothing out in the public, since this is just the first "we'd like to do a project" step as far as the Regents are concerned. Once they approve the project, then plans will get presented for approval at a later Regents meeting.

But I'm sure there are sketches that are available privately, and/or in the room as Tigerguy said.

I’m betting there is one very generous donor to the wrestling project

Probably not a coincidence that the Wrestling program just announced its own "collective."

Does anyone knw if the wrestling room itself be expanded or how exactly this additional space will be utilized exactly? Didn't sound super clear besides saying x amount of square feet will be added.

Interesting renderings. I am not sure how much it will cost to keep a wrestling room at 90F during an Iowa winter with that much glass but it might take all of Mr. Malcolm's $5 million. 1682018859340.png

I read it as 16,000 sq ft added on to the building. I assume its two levels. All of the locker room/weight room/training room on the south end will get renovated. I have not been there for years but if the locker rooms are anything like they were when I ran, They badly needed renovation then.
